Overview
The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) is a global community of over 250 leading businesses driving systems transformation for a sustainable future. The organization works to limit climate impact, restore nature, and tackle inequality while accelerating value chain transformation and reshaping the financial system to reward sustainable leadership. WBCSD seeks a Director to lead the Actions and Market Instruments (AMI) work within the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) and contribute to the development of high-integrity, high-quality, and easy-to-implement standards.
The role reports to the Standards Director & Technical Lead of the GHG Protocol and is based at the World Resources Institute (WRI).
Responsibilities
* Develop strategy and oversee delivery of GHG Protocol’s new standard covering Actions and Market Instruments (AMI).
* Manage the work and a team of staff and secondees to develop the standard at a high level of quality and on ambitious timelines, achieving key milestones including public consultations.
* Oversee multi-stakeholder processes to develop the standard, including regular virtual and in-person meetings to develop proposals and achieve consensus.
* Ensure accountability for public consultations, stakeholder engagement, and drafts of the AMI standard.
* Oversee the production of technical materials within the workstream, in collaboration with the Technical Working Group, Independent Standards Board, and external stakeholders.
* Engage with external stakeholders across corporates, financial institutions, NGOs, and academics to align and foster collaboration.
* Coordinate with the Science Based Targets initiative, regulatory programs, and other voluntary programs to harmonize GHG mitigation, disclosure, target setting, and market mechanisms.
* Collaborate within the GHG Protocol Standards team and maintain relationships with other workstream leads and internal stakeholders.
* Provide technical and strategic support to leadership in external communications, including updates and responses to stakeholder concerns.
* Support other GHG Protocol projects and activities as needs arise.
* Represent GHG Protocol within the climate ecosystem and the broader business community.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
* Experience
Master’s Degree in business, environmental science, or related fields (preferred).
* Extensive leadership experience with strategic definition and implementation, especially related to decarbonization and standard-setting in global companies.
* Deep technical knowledge of Greenhouse Gas Protocol standards, corporate GHG accounting and reporting for Scope 1, 2, and 3, market instruments, carbon credits and markets, and chain-of-custody certification models.
* Strong evidence of action orientation, stakeholder mobilization, and ability to manage complex, volatile, uncertain, and ambiguous topics with competing agendas.
* Proven project steering, facilitation of diverse perspectives, and delivery of results in complex settings, including management of teams.
* Excellent communication, facilitation, and stakeholder engagement skills; ability to interact with senior technical decision-makers and multi-stakeholder groups.
* Analytical, writing, and presentation skills; ability to lead and supervise across organizations.
* Authentic and empathetic leadership; ability to build and nurture teams across hosting organizations (WBCSD and WRI) and external partners.
* Strong organizational skills and fluency in English (additional languages are an advantage).
The position is full-time for an initial period of 2 years and is based in London or Amsterdam; travel will be required.
