Overview
GLD is seeking an Environmental Lawyer based in Manchester, UK to advise on planning law related to housing, environmental protection, and energy security. The role is part of the Government Legal Department, which provides legal services across all Whitehall departments.
Responsibilities
The role involves:
* Advising on planning and environmental matters for the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) to support housing supply initiatives.
* Providing legal advice to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) on domestic and international legislation affecting the natural environment.
* Assisting the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) with decarbonisation technologies, energy efficiency, and net‑zero obligations.
* Supporting other GP departments such as the Department for Transport with planning and infrastructure advice.
Qualifications & Experience
* Specialist experience in planning and environmental law.
* Sound technical knowledge of town and county planning or infrastructure law and public law.
* Experience in planning or environmental litigation and advisory, whether in a law firm, as a barrister, in‑house at a private company, public body, regulator, or NGO.
* Good understanding of the role of lawyers in government.

* Risk‑based advice paired with sound judgment.
* Ability to communicate and influence, work together, and manage a quality service.
Security Clearance
All GLD employees must hold BPSS security clearance. Successful candidates must hold, or be willing and able to obtain, CTC clearance for London and baseline elsewhere.
