We are seeking a strategic and hands-on International Indirect Tax Manager to oversee VAT compliance and drive operational improvements across our firm’s global footprint, with a particular focus on Europe, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific (EMEA & APAC). This is a key role within the tax function, requiring both technical VAT expertise and the ability to lead and influence teams in a complex, cross-border environment. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Manage end-to-end VAT compliance processes across multiple jurisdictions, ensuring accurate and timely filings in accordance with local regulations. Serve as the firm’s internal point of contact for indirect tax matters in EMEA and APAC, coordinating with external advisors and internal finance teams. Oversee self-billing compliance requirements, particularly with respect to self-employed lawyers in key jurisdictions, ensuring alignment with VAT rules and documentation standards. Identify, develop, and implement process improvements and automation opportunities to streamline VAT reporting and reduce risk. Collaborate with local finance teams, practice group leaders, and external vendors to ensure VAT compliance on cross-border billing arrangements and interoffice transactions. Assist with structuring cross-border billing arrangements in compliance with applicable tax treaty requirements and local withholding tax obligations and prepare necessary documentation (e.g. India 10-F, TRCs, etc). Provide technical guidance and training to internal teams on VAT treatment of legal services, particularly in areas where local rules may differ or be evolving. Monitor global VAT developments and collaborate with Financial Systems & Billing Teams to ensure compliance with electronic invoicing mandates. Support VAT audits and inquiries, working with local authorities and legal counsel where needed. Opportunities to support HR function with research/decision-making on global mobility tax issues, secondments, and cross-border employment. Coach and manage junior tax and finance professionals to drive accountability and timely execution of compliance tasks. QUALIFICATIONS: At least 5–8 years of experience in international indirect tax, with a strong focus on VAT compliance and advisory in a multinational or professional services environment. Proven success in leading process improvements and implementing scalable VAT solutions. Demonstrated understanding of self-billing arrangements and their VAT implications in Europe and other jurisdictions. Strong knowledge of VAT systems in key jurisdictions across EMEA and APAC. Experience managing or coordinating cross-border teams and working across time zones. Capable of managing multiple assignments and taking ownership of key responsibilities. Excellent communication skills and the ability to convey complex tax issues to non-tax professionals. Experience in the legal services sector or another professional services industry is highly preferred. Proficiency with law firm technology platforms (e.g., Aderant, Elite3) is a plus.
