Brief description
We’re looking for someone with strong technical ability and leadership skills to join our Specialist Fleet Services (SFS) team as a Workshop Controller.
Purpose of the role
This key role involves managing the day-to-day operations of a busy municipal workshop, including routine maintenance and repairs on a varied fleet of vehicles and equipment. The post holder will serve as the Senior Technician, overseeing workshop productivity and quality.
Duties and responsibilities
* Manage daily workshop operations, including work loading, scheduling, quality assurance, and technical advice.
* Diagnose and perform maintenance and repairs on vehicles and assets.
* Ensure timely and high-standard completion of paperwork.
* Verify job card accuracy and vehicle maintenance history, including warranty considerations.
* Schedule MOTs and service appointments at least three months in advance.
* Maintain up-to-date service schedules and recommend adjustments as needed.
* Communicate effectively with customers and colleagues, ensuring courteous service.
* Coordinate parts ordering and rebooking for incomplete jobs.
* Manage holiday and standby rotas to ensure adequate workshop cover.
* Report urgent issues to the Contract Manager and undertake additional duties as required.
* Uphold high levels of customer service and workshop standards.
About You
Skills
* Experience in heavy vehicle maintenance environments.
* Ability to manage a fleet of light and heavy vehicles.
* Municipal vehicle maintenance knowledge.
* Leadership and staff motivation skills.
* Proficient in completing accurate paperwork.
* Experience with parts supply management and stock control.
* Computer literacy, including vehicle management systems.
* Excellent communication skills.
* Strong personnel management skills.
* Hold an HGV (Category C) license.
Qualifications and experience
Relevant qualifications include an automotive apprenticeship, HNC in Automotive Engineering and Science, or equivalent. CPC qualification in Road Haulage and Fleetwave system knowledge are advantageous.
Working hours
45 hours per week, Monday to Friday, variable hours with one hour for lunch. We encourage applications even if all criteria are not met.
