Job Summary
We are a small but proactive ‘acute’ Speech and Language Therapy team at the Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust. This role will primarily focus on assessment, management and therapy for patients in the Stroke HASU (Acute Stroke Unit) and ASU (Acute Stroke Unit) wards. The service delivers a weekly videofluoroscopy clinic and FEES when required. You will be trained in elements of the PHEAST trial and may be involved in the Phagenesis research project if funding is secured.
Main Duties
* Provide specialist assessment, therapy and advice to stroke patients with communication and swallowing disorders.
* Support the general acute ward population during times of reduced capacity, prioritising the Stroke caseload.
* Co‑ordinate Stroke SLT interventions in the absence of a senior staff member.
* Deliver specialist knowledge, advice, training and teaching to carers, students, SLT team, medical staff and relevant MDT members.
* Support junior SLT staff within the acute service.
* Develop therapy care plans carried out by Speech and Language Therapy Assistants while retaining overall responsibility for the clients.
* Produce written reports and liaise with medical staff, families and voluntary organisations.
Qualifications
Essential
* HCPC accreditation/registration.
* Recognised Speech & Language Therapy Degree qualification or equivalent.
* 5 GCSEs or equivalent level of literacy and numeracy.
Desirable
* Informal qualifications gained through in‑service training, short courses and work experience.
Clinical Skills
Essential
* Minimum 1 year experience with a caseload following CVA.
Desirable
* Experience with tracheostomy management.
Knowledge & Experience
Essential
* Extensive experience with adults (preferably following CVA) who have a range of speech, language and communication needs.
* Able to construct clear care plans for a specific client group, differentiating appropriate therapy from a range of options based on assessment, theoretical knowledge and clinical benchmarking.
* Able to make appropriate clinical decisions following assessment, with access to a supervisor.
Desirable
* Experience in managing patients with tracheostomy tubes.
Personal and People Development
Essential
* Willing to support student SALTs, SALTAs and volunteers where designated to do so, for their information and development.
* Show active interest in CPD in line with RCSLT guidelines, within area of clinical specialism (minimum 1 year).
