Become the Fire Engineering Director at the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE); providing authoritative technical leadership to advance fire engineering standards and practice.
Salary: £80,000 per annum (dependent on experience)
Who we are
The Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) is the global professional body for fire engineering, committed to advancing knowledge, competence and ethical practice across the sector. Our work supports safer buildings, stronger regulation and higher professional standards, helping to protect people, property and the environment.
As fire risk grows in complexity, driven by changes in the built environment, materials, climate and regulation, the need for authoritative, trusted technical leadership has never been greater. The IFE plays a central role in convening expertise, setting standards and supporting fire professionals in navigating this changing landscape.
About the role
We are seeking a Fire Engineering Director (FED) to provide senior technical leadership and to shape the Institution’s professional contribution at a critical moment for fire safety.
Reporting to the CEO and working closely with trustees, volunteers and colleagues across the organisation, the FED is responsible for the leadership and development of the IFE’s fire engineering activities.
You will provide expert advice and guidance across the Institution, supporting members, staff and stakeholders on complex fire engineering matters. You will lead work that strengthens professional standards, guidance and technical credibility and you will contribute actively to policy discussions, consultations and position statements at national and international levels.
The role requires a balance of deep technical expertise and strategic perspective. You will help ensure the IFE’s voice is respected, evidence-based and independent, while remaining accessible and grounded in real-world practice. You will also play a key role in supporting volunteers, special interest groups and professional networks that sit at the heart of the Institution.
Who we are looking for
You will preferably be a Chartered Engineer, or near to achieving chartered status – not necessarily within the fire industry, but this could be in allied contemporary building safety practice. You will be able to demonstrate significant senior technical experience and a strong understanding of contemporary fire engineering and fire safety practice. Alongside this, you will have a keen interest in developing your own fire engineering expertise, credibility within the profession and confidence operating at both strategic and operational levels.
This is a role that requires someone who is comfortable communicating complex technical issues clearly and responsibly to a wide range of audiences, from practitioners to policymakers. You will value collaboration, professional ethics and continuous learning and be motivated by the opportunity to serve a profession with real societal impact.
We welcome applications from individuals at earlier stages of their careers, as well as from those with more extensive experience. A commitment to the values and purpose of the IFE, including professionalism, independence and inclusion, will be central to your approach.
Closing date for applications: 9 a.m. Monday 23rd February 2026
