An exciting new opportunity has arisen to join the Stop Smoking Service team based at Forsyth House, supporting the delivery of a high-quality smoking cessation service across Darlington.
This role will play a key part in enhancing and maximising opportunities to provide Very Brief Advice (VBA) to people who smoke across all primary healthcare settings. By working collaboratively with healthcare professionals and community partners, the postholder will help increase engagement with stop smoking support and contribute to reducing smoking prevalence locally.
Job description
The role involves supporting the Stop Smoking Service team, enhancing and maximising opportunities to deliver Very Brief Advice across all primary healthcare settings, targeting those most likely to benefit, and promoting the service in and around Darlington. It may include some evening and weekend working.
Key responsibilities
* Act as the key liaison between the Stop Smoking Service and GP Practices and other primary health care settings, serving as a Single Point of Contact (SPOC) for queries and providing additional support.
* Fully explain how the Service operates, including referral processes and available stop smoking support aids; undertake relevant training on NRT, vapes and Pharmacotherapy.
* Support clients within Darlington to refer to the service or begin their behaviour change journey.
* Provide continuous support to people to decide to make a quit attempt or try again.
* Provide mini awareness sessions/drop ins from any primary health care setting waiting area, promoting the Service and outlining products available to support quitting and relapse prevention.
* Target support to people living in the borough with long‑term conditions exacerbated by smoking.
* Request and coordinate the supply of medication and/or quit aids.
* Use System1 to target areas with the highest smoking prevalence and support referrals.
* Participate in community engagement activities across Darlington to promote smoking cessation services.
* Maintain confidentiality of patient and service information.
Administration
* Have a thorough knowledge of all department procedures.
* Work in accordance with written protocols.
* Record information in the client’s medical records (SystmOne) and other data‑collecting systems.
* Ensure messages and information are passed on to relevant staff or outside agencies.
* Run reports.
Telephone
* Have working knowledge of the telephone system during and after hours.
* Provide an efficient and courteous system of answering the telephone.
* Liaise with healthcare professionals and other professional bodies.
Other Tasks
* Attend community events and promote the service.
* Carry out any other tasks allocated by the service team Management.
Computer
* General data input and information retrieval.
* Input data into clinical systems.
* Perform searches for clients who may require support.

In the course of seeking treatment, patients entrust us with sensitive information. Staff must respect privacy, keep such information strictly confidential, and disclose only to authorised persons in accordance with policy.
Communications and Working Relationships
* Internal: Stop Smoking Service Coordinator, Office Manager, Doctors, Primary care Nursing staff, Pharmacy team, and Administration team member.
* External: Public Health team, Patients (clients), Pharmacists, Acute Sector personnel and other healthcare professionals.
Personal and People Development
Commit to developing self and others. All managerial and supervisory posts must ensure staff have equal access to career progression, be appraised annually, and prepare and update Personal Development Plans.
Training
The post holder will be suitably trained to a nationally recognised standard such as that provided by NCSCT, and will demonstrate competence to deliver the Service. Training includes: promotion of MECC (Making Every Contact Count), delivery of VBA and brief interventions, support for behavioural change, and running data reports on System One.
Health and Safety Responsibility

Person specification
Experience (Essential)
* Experience of working with the general public, preferably within the primary or public health environment.
* Experience of community engagement activities.
Experience (Desirable)
* Experience of working within a healthcare or public health setting.
Communication (Essential)
* Excellent communication skills, both verbal and non‑verbal.
* Ability to handle sensitive data with confidentiality.
* Be able to travel across sites to promote the service.

* Experience communicating with clients in a similar setting.
Qualifications (Essential)
* 3 x GCSE grade C and above in Maths and English minimum.
* IT skills/qualification.
Qualifications (Desirable)
* Knowledge of tobacco services Level 2 smoking cessation.
