Oncology CSU is part of Leeds Cancer Centre, one of the largest providers of specialist cancer care in the UK. The CSU is comprised of 9 business units: Medical and Clinical Oncology, Haematology, Surgical Oncology including Gynae-oncology, Breast and Thoracic Surgery, HMDS, Radiotherapy, Specialist Palliative Care and Medical Physics. There are 9 inpatient wards and a number of day case and outpatient facilities, and we employ over 1400 staff including over 500 nurses.
The Matron will support the speciality teams in the delivery of patient focused, compassionate care whilst maintaining high standards and excellent clinical outcomes. The Matron is responsible for ensuring the efficient and effective day to day running across the Oncology CSU wards and departments, delivering key quality, performance, and financial plans as well as service improvements. The Matron will line manage designated staff and report to the Head of Nursing.
Your role as Oncology Matron will be to provide leadership support and motivation to our high performing team, using critical thinking in decision making to maintain a safe and efficient environment for patients and for staff.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will work closely with the wards/departments, Head of Nursing, Lead Clinicians and Service Managers. They will provide management and leadership support for the inpatient wards and CNS teams.
We are looking for a senior nurse with experience in managing and leading a nursing team who has the ambition and drive to develop the team to deliver new and innovative ways of working. Applicants should be able to demonstrate that they possess strong leadership skills and be passionate about the delivery of the highest standards of patient care and the development of the nursing workforce.
As a key member of the senior team, the Matron is integral to the development of the strategic vision for services and accountable for nurse staffing and care delivery in the wards and departments for which they are responsible.
Experience of working at a senior level within cancer or associated services is desirable but candidates with senior experience within other specialties will be considered.
Job responsibilities
The jobholder will have overall responsibility for the management of nursing/associated staff and the management of nursing resources/budgets within the CSU or a part of it. The jobholder will be accountable for ensuring the highest standard of clinical care is provided within the wards and departments for which they are responsible and ensure the principles of clinical governance are implemented at a local level. The jobholder will work in partnership with the facilities department in ensuring high standards of hospital cleanliness are maintained, embracing the principles outlined in the Matrons charter.
The jobholder will be easily identifiable to patients, provide strong leadership through a visible presence and provide support, advice and assistance required by patients, their families and carers. The jobholder will also support the implementation of the Patient Advice and Liaison Service, being a focal point for advice to patients and carers and local resolution of complaints.
Current services comprise wards and departments across Oncology CSU. The jobholder has through Senior Sisters/Charge Nurses direct management of approximately 100-150 whole time equivalent nursing and support staff. The jobholder has direct line management of the specialist nurses within the CSU or a part of it. The jobholder is responsible for the management of nursing resources and ward and department budgets.
Principal Duties & Areas of Responsibility
1. Be responsible for the management of human and material resources within the designated area and play a key role in ensuring the CSU delivers a balanced budget.
2. Manage the delegation of ward/department budgets to Senior Sister/Charge Nurses and Nurse Specialists providing support and advice as required.
3. Ensure performance measures are implemented to monitor/develop financial management at ward/department level.
4. Be responsible for the allocation of staff to all areas, ensuring adequate staffing cover is provided on a daily basis. Review nursing establishments to ensure skill mix reflects current workload requirements and represents best use of resources.
5. Oversee the use of bank and agency staff and monitor expenditure to ensure financial balance is achieved.
6. Review trends on expenditure and activity accordingly and action to be taken.
Quality of Care/Clinical Governance
1. Work with members of the Clinical Management Team (CMT) to deliver high quality, timely health care.
2. Contribute to the implementation of National Service Frameworks (where applicable) and National Policy.
3. Work closely with Senior Sisters/Charge Nurses to secure and ensure the highest standard of clinical care is provided within available resources.
4. Work in conjunction with Clinical Directors, business managers and other CMT staff to ensure national patient access targets are met.
5. Support bed management processes within the CMT.
6. Ensure processes at Ward/Dept encompass measures to ensure smooth transition of patients through the care pathway.
