Aspiring School Counsellor – SEMH Teaching Support Assistant

Pay: £108.00 – £115.00 per day

Hours: Monday to Friday | Full-time
Start Date: ASAP

Are you an aspiring School Counsellor looking to gain valuable experience supporting children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs in a school setting?

We are currently recruiting for a dedicated and compassionate SEMH Teaching Support Assistant to join a welcoming specialist secondary school in Cramlington. This role is ideal for graduates or individuals considering a future career in counselling, psychology, therapy, social work or mental health support.

This is a fantastic opportunity to build hands-on experience working closely with young people who require emotional and behavioural support, while developing key skills in communication, emotional regulation and relationship building.

About the School

This specialist secondary school provides a nurturing and supportive environment for pupils with additional needs. The school has a strong focus on pastoral care and emotional wellbeing, helping students feel safe, understood and supported throughout their education.

Staff work collaboratively to support pupils both academically and emotionally, using a consistent and therapeutic approach to behaviour support and positive relationship building.

The Role

As an SEMH Teaching Support Assistant, you will:

• Support pupils on a 1:1 basis and in small groups
• Help students regulate emotions and engage positively in learning
• Build strong and trusting relationships with young people
• Support behaviour management and de-escalation strategies
• Encourage confidence, resilience and social development
• Work closely with teachers, pastoral staff and external professionals

The Ideal Candidate

• Interested in pursuing a career in school counselling, psychology or mental health
• Experience working with young people or vulnerable individuals is desirable
• Calm, patient and emotionally resilient
• Able to build positive relationships and maintain professional boundaries
• Passionate about supporting children with additional needs
• Team Teach or similar training is desirable but not essential
