Locum Consultant in Respiratory Medicine

The trust is seeking to appoint a substantive Consultant in Respiratory and General medicine, to join 13 existing consultants for a 6 month fixed term period. The Respiratory Department is highly successful and nationally renowned. Each of the existing consultants has a strong general Respiratory background with subspecialty interests in lung cancer, mesothelioma, sleep disordered breathing, non-invasive ventilation, pulmonary physiology, interstitial lung disease, medical thoracoscopy, COPD and asthma. We have established EBUS, bronchoscopy and medical thoracoscopy services across the trust. Both Winchester and Basingstoke sites are supported by a visiting Thoracic surgeon. The post holder will be expected to support the existing respiratory outpatient services across our hospitals with a base at the Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital for inpatient services.
There are currently a wide range of resident doctors with various training levels including registrars, clinical fellows, IMTs, foundation doctors and physician associates. Respiratory nurse specialists are based on each site, covering lung cancer, sleep, tuberculosis, interstitial lung disease and airways disease services in addition to a specialist respiratory physiotherapist on each site who provides sputum clearance and breathing pattern disorder clinics.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be required to fulfil the requirements of the Royal College of Physicians and the General Medical Council for continuing education, clinical governance, personal development and audit, and programmed activity is made available to facilitate this.
The job plan is based on 10 PAs. Currently inpatient ward cover is on a 6-week rolling rota covered by 6 consultants. Example job plan (based on 8.5 DCC and 1.5 SPA): On wards:o Ward weeks include ward rounds/board rounds, supporting ward referrals, supporting ambulatory clinic fellow
Off wards:o 3 Outpatient clinics.
o Up to 2 endoscopy sessions depending on skills interest (bronchoscopy/EBUS).
o MDTs (lung cancer, ILD, sleep and community COPD).
Any successful applicant will be involved in the regional/departmental teaching programmes.

Person Specification
Professional Qualifications
* MBBS/MRCP or equivalent
* Licence to practice and full registration with GMC
* Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register in RM and GIM via CCT/ CESR or within 6 months of completion of CCT at time of interview
* Distinctions, Scholarships prizes, other degrees eg BSc MSc, MS
* Higher degree (MD/PhD) or working towards
Clinical Experience & Knowledge
* Broad experience of general Respiratory Medicine
* Recent experience of managing general medical patients
* Medical Thoracoscopy experience
* Cardiopulmonary exercise testing experience - supervising and interpretation.
Clinical Skills & Ability
* Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit as well as QUIP
* Cardiopulmonary exercise test interpretation and experience.
Research & Teaching skills
* An understanding of general principles, scientific method and interpretation of literature.
* Commitment to teaching of both undergraduates and postgraduates and evidence of active participation in teaching and education
* Evidence of personal research
* Projects and their presentation.
* Publications in peer-reviewed journals.
* MD/PhD
* Attendance at specialist programmes to improve teaching/educational skills.
* Expertise in teaching.

* To have undertaken a postgraduate course on communication skills (or ensure that you have undertaken one within one year of appointment)
* Ability to establish good professional relations
