Patient Transport Crew

As a Patient Transport Crew Member in the NHS, you are responsible for safely transporting non-emergency patients to and from healthcare appointments—including hospitals, clinics, and day care centres—by driving a dedicated vehicle and assisting patients with getting in and out. You will ensure their comfort and well-being throughout the journey, acting as a dedicated driver and caregiver for patients who cannot use public transportation due to their medical condition.
You will crew vehicles based at any of the Patient Transport sites, conveying patients between hospital treatment and their home, always ensuring their comfort and safety during transit. You will provide a high‑quality, client‑sensitive service and pass a driver assessment arranged after a successful interview.
Main duties of the job
* Carry up to the maximum capacity of patients on the PTS vehicles while maintaining strict appointment times.
* Maintain communication with PTS Control, enabling the addition or cancellation of patients as necessary.
* Participate in a rota system covering any shift required for the Service.
* Maintain dignity and individuality of patients at all times, ensuring their needs are met, including toileting and feeding as necessary.
* Provide support—including the lifting, pulling, carrying, and pushing of patients weighing up to and over 150 kg between home, treatment centres, and vehicle using appropriate equipment and techniques.
* Ensure that a correct patient handover is carried out.
* Display good driving skills to provide a safe and comfortable journey for patients of different mobilities and dependencies.
Person Specification
Experience
* Full UK Driving Licence
* C1 category driving licence
* Ability to cover any shift required by the service, occasionally and in escalation at short notice.
Qualifications and Training
* NVQ 3 or equivalent level of experience such as HCA
* Good numeracy and literacy skills
* Willingness to undertake training relevant to the post
* COSHH, Health & Safety
* Customer Care Training
* Patient Care Training
