We are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated individual who has a keen eye for detail to join our dynamic team of Clinical Coders at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust!

Whilst applicants holding the National Clinical Coding Qualification (NCCQ) are preferred, trained Clinical Coders without the NCCQ may be considered for a Band 4 Clinical Coder position, with a view to attain their NCCQ.

Applicants should state clearly in their application the band/role for which they’d like to be considered.

Applicants with relevant coding experience would join us as a band 4 Clinical Coder, or band 5 Accredited Clinical Coder, depending on their knowledge and expertise. You will be supported by our team of experienced trainers and auditors tomaintain personal development, building on your existing skills and learning new ones through our extensive training and quality assurance programmes.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be responsible for extracting and translating complex medical data to timely and accurately assign clinical codes for all in-patient episodes. Therefore, you must possess an exceptional attention to detail, be capable of organising your own workload and be able to work under pressure to ensure strict monthly departmental and national deadlines are met. You will have a proven record of working in a team and contributing to the team’s success and be able to effectively communicate with all relevant healthcare professions.

Education, Qualifications and Training for Band 5

Essential criteria

9. Educated to GCSE Level or equivalent. Maths and English at Grade 4 or above – or equivalent qualification/demonstrable experience
10. National Clinical Coding Qualification (NCCQ) with Accredited Clinical Coder status – mandatory professional qualification

Experience and Knowledge Required

Essential criteria

11. Specialist clinical coding expertise with demonstrated excellence in complex case resolution and advanced accuracy standards as per Data Security and Protection Toolkit requirements

Aptitude and Personal Qualities for Band 5

Essential criteria

12. Manage multiple competing priorities effectively, balancing urgent coding queries, audit deadlines, training commitments, and strategic projects whilst maintaining consistently high standards
13. Can work autonomously and part of a team

Education, Qualifications and Training for Band 4

15. Has completed the National Clinical Coding Standards Course and received comprehensive training on a wide range of secondary care inpatient specialities
16. Is working towards/willing to work towards sitting the National Clinical Coding Qualification (NCCQ) to become an Accredited Clinical Coder

Aptitude and Personal Qualities for Band 4

Essential criteria

17. Can act as a mentor to other less experienced coders
18. Able to communicate complex clinical information and coding rules effectively with senior clinicians and administrative colleagues, demonstrating expert knowledge in discussions
