The Role:
We are seeking a National Competitions Manager to support our efforts in increasing participation and retention in rugby. This role offers a chance to influence the rugby union playing landscape in England, focusing on adult and age-grade (under 16+) competitions for both males and females.
The role involves working collaboratively with volunteers and governance structures, ensuring high operational standards, streamlining regulations, and managing competitions or events to grow or maintain match volume and completion rates. A key aspect is shaping the evolution of national RFU competitions through engaging with stakeholders, including RFU Council Members, committees, clubs, coaches, and players.
This is an exciting opportunity to help define the future of rugby competitions in England, requiring proactive, adaptable, and influential leadership.
The Team:
The Rugby Development team aims to increase participation and retention in rugby, supporting the RFU purpose: “to enrich lives, introduce more people to rugby union, and develop the sport for future generations.” This role is part of the competitions team within Player Experience, which covers various participation initiatives across the country.
Key Responsibilities:
* Operate approved national RFU community rugby competitions, leading and organizing teams to meet current and future needs.
* Create innovative solutions to reduce cancellations and postponements, enhancing player experience and club sustainability.
* Implement systems to capture results efficiently and make data accessible widely.
* Build and maintain relationships with key staff and volunteers across the game, including councils, regions, clubs, and committees.
* Collaborate with legal and governance teams to oversee competition integrity and develop regulations.
* Serve as the primary contact for competition-related queries and participate in relevant committees or task groups.
* Influence scheduling, standards, and budgets related to competitions.
* Contribute to strategic, business, and operational planning.
* Promote RFU values and culture, acting as an ambassador.
* Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications, Skills & Experience:
We welcome candidates with diverse experiences and the following:
* Experience in sports development, competition management, or related fields.
* Understanding of sport competition structures, ideally within rugby.
* Leadership experience with strategic planning and team management skills.
* Ability to influence and build relationships with diverse stakeholders, including volunteers.
* Strong project management and multitasking skills.
* Proactive, resilient, and adaptable with a commitment to inclusivity and core values.
* Relevant educational background or practical experience.
* Experience in team leadership, mentoring, or coaching qualifications is advantageous.
* Proficiency in MS Office and Smartsheet.
