Overview

This is an exciting opportunity to join our tertiary asthma service and specialist children's respiratory nursing team. The post holder will be part of a multidisciplinary team delivering expert asthma care at the Royal London Hospital and across the North East London (NEL) network, while supporting and advising secondary care teams.

They will independently manage their own tertiary asthma caseload and shared care patients from referring sites, assessing and coordinating complex cases in partnership with the Network Lead for Children's Asthma, secondary care colleagues, and the wider respiratory, allergy, and physiology MDT. The role also involves liaison with ED, inpatient, and PCCU teams.

Working collaboratively, the post holder will help develop care pathways to ensure children with severe asthma receive timely, appropriate management. They will contribute to service improvement through pathway design, audit, teaching, and research, including projects on environment and air pollution.

As a clinical leader, they will exemplify best practice, provide expert advice, and act as a referral point for complex asthma across the NEL network, while actively contributing to respiratory nursing management alongside the CNS team and wider MDT.


Main duties

This is an exciting opportunity to join part of our expanding asthma service and team of Children\'s respiratory nurse specialists. The post holder will work as part of the multidisciplinary team to deliver high level specialist asthma care across the Northeast London Integrated Care System network area (NEL-ICS), and to support and advise the secondary care asthma teams in Tower Hamlets and across the network.

The post holder will be expected to work independently leading and managing his/her own asthma patient cohort. The post holder is expected to have or develop the skills and ability to assess and coordinate the management of complex asthmatic patients in conjunction with the Network Lead for Children\'s Asthma, the secondary care leads across NEL, and the wider specialist asthma, respiratory, allergy and physiology MDT. They will develop pathways to ensure children with complex and high risk asthma are managed in the right setting, at the right time, and in the right way. Through these pathways they will audit and improve standards of asthma care across primary and secondary as well as tertiary settings, by way of the promotion of audit, teaching, and research activity both locally and across the network.

The post holder will highlight and exemplify best practice, being a resource for advice and conduit for referral and assessment of children with complex asthma for the NEL network.

Person Specification

Qualifications

* RSCN / RN (Child)
* Degree in Nursing BSc
* Specialist course in respiratory nursing or asthma
* Evidence of professional development and leadership training
* Mentorship/Teaching qualification
* Level 3 safeguarding training

Experience

* Significant post registration experience working with children who have respiratory illness or asthma
* Experience of working with students and facilitating their learning needs
* Relevant current clinical experience
* Advanced assessment skills
* Previous knowledge/experience of assessing children\'s lung function e.g. PEFR Spirometer

Knowledge

* Knowledge of current NICE asthma guidelines
* Understanding of the pathophysiology of asthma and current treatment protocols
* Knowledge and understanding of governance and duty of candour

Desirable

* Working towards relevant degree or masters
* MSc level of study in children\'s in physical assessment
* Independent Non Medical Nurse Prescribing Course
* EPLS / APLS
