Overview

This is a new exciting opportunity as a one-year appointment as a Foot and Ankle fellow for the United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust.

The Foot and Ankle Unit at ULHT has four substantive Consultants. The Fellowship is run by Mr Ashok Marudanayagam, Mr Harish Kurup, Mr Nijil Vasukutty and Mr Munier Hossain, and there will be an opportunity to work with all of the foot and ankle Consultants. The team sees a wide range of elective foot and ankle cases, including ankle replacement, diabetic foot management and complex foot deformity corrections as well as specialist trauma referrals such as complex trimalleolar fractures and Lisfranc fractures.

The successful candidate will be encouraged to continue to develop their sub-specialty interest, contribute to diabetic network and also to the general work of the department including a strong teaching commitment, clinical management and effective team working.

You will be fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) and ideally have a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Orthopaedic Surgery or be within six months of award of CCT at the time of interview. We would welcome informal enquiries about this post to.

Main duties of the job

The Fellowship is specifically designed for a Senior Orthopaedic Trainee (or equivalent) that is post-FRCS (Orth) exam, and planning a career in foot and ankle surgery.

The aim of the Fellowship is to provide clinical training and experience in all aspects of foot and ankle Surgery. Fellows are encouraged to undertake new and ongoing research projects, and will be expected to present and publish their work.

The Fellow will be exposed to a high volume of foot and ankle surgeries. There will be the opportunity to perform surgeries independently depending on the experience of the selected candidate.

We have a well recognised diabetic MDT meeting regularly. This is an educative meeting where all the specialists involved in the diabetic foot management discuss about complex cases. The Fellow will be expected to attend this meeting.

Although the Fellowship is new, it intends to pride itself on its excellent operative training and supervision. It will maintain a training list ethos to its weekly timetable rather than a pure service provision only. Once the fellow has gained sufficient experience and is deemed ready, there may be the opportunity to do supervised parallel lists to increase confidence in independent operating to prepare them for a consultant post.

Job responsibilities

The Trust has the required arrangements in place to ensure that all surgeons have an annual appraisal with a trained appraiser and supports surgeons going through the revalidation process. There will be an annual appraisal.

There is an active post-graduate centre and extensive reference library at all the hospitals. There is an orthopaedic teaching meeting held every Monday lunch time.

There are regular teaching programmes with master class surgical sessions for medical and nursing staff. There are facilities for teleconferencing at the post- graduate centre. There is also a fully equipped skills lab. The Trust is committed to further education and wherever possible funding will be provided for audit / research programme.

The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) as laid down by the GMC and surgical colleges.

The successful candidate will be provided with mentoring from a senior colleague for as long as is necessary, to help them settle into work as easily as possible.

The United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust recognizes its duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 to ensure, as far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of all its employees. Person Specification


Qualification/Clinical skills

Essential

* Full GMC registration
* FRCS or qualification of an equivalent level

Desirable

* Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via: oCCT or CESR (CP) - proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date must be within 6 months of interview) o
* CESR or European Community Rights


Special Knowledge/Abilities and/or Experience

Essential

* Minimum of 6months full time or equivalent part time experience of foot and ankle surgery at middle- grade level


Person Skills/Qualities

Essential

* Good communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to teach trainees and medical students.


Interests and Motivation to the job

Essential

* To maintain own education to a minimum standard set by the Royal College of Surgeons


Academic achievements/research publication

Essential

* An interest in research and audit


Desirable

* Higher Research Degrees (MD, MS, MSc, PhD)
* Research publications in peer reviewed journals


Other skills (eg.audit/teaching/ management)

Essential

* Enthusiasm to assist in development of Orthopaedic services.


Desirable

* Experience in teaching undergraduate medical students.
* Member of BASK/ BHS
