Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP)

AMHPs carry out a range of tasks and assessments within the scope of the Mental Health Act, including considerations under s13, making applications to detain, and using Guardianship and Community Treatment Orders to support well-being in the community. Knowledge of the MHA, MCA, and Human Rights Act is essential for AMHP work.

The AMHP team provides support and advice to local health and social care teams regarding complex practice issues where mental disorder is significant, and legal frameworks need consideration to ensure appropriate care and safe practice. The team also contributes to MDT working, safeguarding meetings, and can undertake joint visits with health and social care colleagues.


Main duties of the job

The postholder will undertake responsibilities as determined by the Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended by the Mental Health Act 2007) and associated legislation, codes of practice, and guidance.

They will have independent responsibility for assessments under the Mental Health Act, including planning and evaluating care for service users.

The postholder will provide specialised clinical advice to colleagues, managers, and partner agencies regarding mental health law application. They will also supervise less experienced staff and trainees, and contribute to policy development and audits.

Job responsibilities

Undertake duties under the Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended 2007), Mental Health Act Code of Practice, and related legislation, including the Mental Capacity Act 2005 where trained.

Conduct mental health assessments, develop and coordinate care plans, and make applications for compulsory admission or guardianship as appropriate.

Make independent judgments about hospital admissions, considering alternatives and the least restrictive options.

Provide clear reports and maintain records in compliance with legal requirements.

Promote effective supervision, provide professional leadership, and ensure adherence to clinical guidelines and standards.

Advise on mental health legislation, support incident reviews, and lead service development initiatives related to mental health law.

Conduct audits to ensure compliance with the MHA and participate in out-of-hours/weekends/on-call work as needed.

Maintain daily contact with inpatient areas, provide scrutiny training for nursing staff, and oversee paperwork for the Mental Health Act Office.


Person Specification


Additional Criteria

* Current registration with the appropriate professional body.
* Enhanced DBS clearance.
* Mobility and ability to travel between service locations.
* IT literacy.
* Experience in presentation and facilitation skills.


Qualifications

* Recognised professional qualification in mental health (e.g., RMN, DipSW, CQSW, BA OT, DipClinPsych, or equivalent) and registration with the appropriate body.
* Post-qualification as an Approved Mental Health Professional.
* Teaching/practice supervision qualification or equivalent is desirable.
* Up-to-date CPD evidence.


Knowledge

* Extensive knowledge of mental health and mental health law.
* Understanding of safeguarding policies.
* Knowledge of health and social care policies.
* Experience in providing practice supervision.


Experience

* Experience in adult mental health and related areas.
* Strong clinical skills working with individuals with mental health needs and their carers.
* Risk assessment and policy familiarity.
* Experience in training delivery across disciplines and levels.
* Participation in regional and national networks and initiatives.
