The post holder will primarily provide cover for schools within Crawley and Mid Sussex.
The post holder will work as a Special School Staff Nurse under the direction of Special School Nurses to support the provision of health care to children and young people in Special Schools, ensuring arrangements are in place to support those with medical conditions.
The post holder will provide clinical and public health nursing for children and young people, partnering with Special School Nurses, the Clinical Lead, Community Children’s Nurses, Community Paediatricians and other health professionals to ensure safe, high quality care.
They will liaise with clinical experts to access specialist knowledge, skills and leadership as required.
The post holder will advise and support school staff with everyday health care needs, may have a delegated caseload and/or support ad hoc work with supervision, working as an autonomous practitioner while liaising with the Named Special School Nurse.
They will assess health care needs and develop and implement health care plans, ensuring plans are updated and care delivered accordingly.
They will support staff learning, including competency-based assessment, enabling equitable access to education and health services.
They will support teaching, mentorship and supervision of staff and students, and safeguard children in line with The Children Act (1989 & 2004) and ‘Working Together to Safeguard Children’ (2013 & 2023).
Work within level of competency to deliver quality nursing care, support, information and advice for a supervised and/or delegated SSN caseload, ensuring appropriate resources are available.
Provide clinical children’s nursing and public health advice within the school setting.
Develop and implement care plans for children and young people with complex health needs and disability.
Identify and provide child‑specific health care procedures training for school staff, including competency-based assessment where required.
Help develop, implement and review clinical protocols and standard operating procedures to support safe care and best nursing practice.
Contribute to single and multi‑agency safeguarding of disabled children, young people and young adults.
Support the delivery of health promotion packages appropriate for a Special School setting.
Ensure timely, concise and accurate documentation of care interventions, including telephone advice and support.
Act as a resource and role model of special school nursing to professionals and colleagues.
Attend relevant education and training updates to support development and clinical practice standards.
Staff may be required to work across West Sussex and Brighton and Hove, and elsewhere within the Trust if required.
Participate in clinical and safeguarding supervision as per Trust policy.

Key Responsibilities
* Deliver and help within the Special School Nursing hub to ensure the consistent delivery of safe quality nursing care for children and young people.
* Continue personal, professional development to maintain competency in key SSN skills relevant to the role.
* Contribute to the School Health Care Plans and emergency care plans alongside the designated Special School Nurse.
* Advise on and implement child/young person specific health education and promotion interventions.
* Facilitate health care teaching and learning for all staff in the school, students and visiting staff during community placements.
* Act as a role model to provide health care leadership and support to school staff.
* Deliver and help maintain high standard, safe, effective health care within the school setting.
* Contribute to Children and Young People’s Community Nursing (CYPCN) Service and school audits, inspections, and/or reviews as appropriate.
* Ensure electronic health records are maintained in compliance with Trust policy and keep accurate, contemporaneous records and written reports as required.
* Assist Head Teachers, Clinical & Team Lead, Safeguarding Team and Matrons / Senior Management Team in coordinating child protection processes in accordance with Trust policy and local safeguarding procedures.
* Maintain and help analyse relevant service data to demonstrate activity of the role/team and identify service needs and possible developments.
* Regularly evaluate the clinical effectiveness of care and, in consultation with Team Lead and Clinical Lead, make adjustments where appropriate to optimise resource use.
* Support in developing, implementing and evaluating guidelines, teaching and competency assessment tools for the CYPCN service for care of identified health needs and promotion of well‑being.
* Participate in nursing research and audit projects relevant to clinical practice in conjunction with CYPCN service’s standards, quality improvement and development forum.
* Ensure clinical incidents are reported via the correct channels and assist with implementing relevant recommendations.
* Contribute to the development of health‑related policies, procedures and guidelines to ensure pupil safety and safe delivery of care in the school setting.
* Work collaboratively with professionals across the health economy, specialist services and other agencies to meet the needs of children, young people and families.
* Implement and maintain the Trust’s quality initiatives and assurance programmes as relevant.
* Actively involve in the orientation, induction and preceptorship of junior staff.
