Job Description:
We are seeking an on-site Senior Linux Engineer, providing Linux support for one of our key public sector clients. This is a high-impact role within a fast-paced and dynamic environment, focused on support, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement.
Due to customer requirements, successful applicants must be eligible for high-level UK Security clearance.
Location: Edinburgh or Newcastle Campus
The successful candidate will join a highly skilled team of support engineers providing technical infrastructure support. The role requires a flexible working ethic and a pragmatic approach to IT support. Candidates should have a second/third line support background, excellent customer service, and communication skills. A keen interest in innovation and a willingness to implement new ways of working and automation are essential.
Education and Experience required:
* Proven track record in support roles within UNIX/Linux environments
* Solid technical background supporting large-scale Unix/Linux Server environments
* Ability to mentor technical staff and partners in troubleshooting complex server environments
* Experience in highly visible roles supporting multiple projects simultaneously
* Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
* Linux and Solaris System Administration
* Comprehensive UNIX/Linux troubleshooting skills
* Red Hat Linux (versions 5.x-8.x) System Administration
* Solaris (versions 10.x-11.x) System Administration
* Knowledge of SRDF & STAR storage replication
* Experience with Clustering (Veritas VCS, RedHat Resilient Storage GFS2)
* Storage and Filesystems (VXFS, ZFS, EXT3, EXT4, XFS, UFS, SVM)
* Volume Managers (VXVM, LVM)
* CyberArk and SCCM compliance support for Configuration Items
* UNIX/Linux auditing and logging systems
* Networking
* LDAP configuration (Server/Client)
* UNIX/Linux Software Patching
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent work experience. Professional-level certifications are preferred. Typically, 5-10 years of relevant experience are required.
Desirable Skills and Knowledge:
* Virtualization (VMware, Solaris Zones, Containers)
* EMC SAN Storage
* Scripting (Shell, Python, Perl, Ansible YAML)
* Configuration management tools (Ansible or CFEngine)
* Familiarity with AIX (version 7)
