The salary for this role is £33, 000 (inclusive of a Market Premium Payment (MPP), onsite working is expected 5 days a week, however, we actively support requests for flexible working.




Job Description


This role can be based at any of the following sites: Culham, Oxfordshire.


This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions.


The Role


Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to make a difference? Join our team and contribute to the future of fusion energy. As Health Physics Technician, you will play a pivotal role in maintaining and reliably delivering a routine radiological protection and occupational hygiene service and providing specialised monitoring support for a wide range of radiological and workplace hazards. You will also supply operational Health Physics advice as requested to engineers and plant technicians for radiological and beryllium related tasks at Culham (JET/MRF/MDF & MAST-U projects).


Additional Responsibilities:


* Performing routine surface and airborne contamination monitoring for the control of radiological and beryllium hazards for assessment of site working procedures.
* Responding to urgent requests for Health Physics cover for radiological protection and/or occupational hygiene advice and providing advice and monitoring in response to incidents, including spills, leaks, releases of radioactivity, chemical release or for site emergency conditions,
* Setting up work areas with the appropriate designation for radiological/beryllium and ensuring control measures are correctly applied and written procedures followed as per work permits and authorisations.
* Completing documents and recording forms for transfers of materials from radiological and beryllium areas. Producing clear chronological reports on the results of contamination monitoring.
* Providing cover for overtime, shifts and on-call support (Health Physics Duty Technician) when required.

Qualifications


Essential Requirements:


* Candidates must have formal qualifications in radiation safety (London Institute, City & Guilds Radiation Safety Practice Stage 1 or the NVQ equivalent.
* Persons should have recent experience of operational radiological protection and a good working knowledge of the Ionising Radiation Regulations (IRR17).
* Candidates must have strong interpersonal skills for communicating clearly with staff who have little or no understanding of radiological or beryllium hazards to ensure compliance with UKAEA standards.
