My client a leading public sector organisation based in Dundonald is currently seeking a Healthcare Scientist Assistant Hours: Monday - Friday,9am - 5pm Pay: £12.31 per hour JOB SUMMARY To support Biomedical Scientists in providing a professional Laboratory service to users and clients. The post holder will work as an integral member of the Laboratory team and be responsible for a wide range of tasks to support/assist all laboratory disciplines provide a high quality laboratory service. In particular they will work within specimen reception to help deliver an efficient and effective laboratory reception service. Post holder will be required to participate in a 24/7 service which may include extended working over days, nights, weekends and Public holidays KEY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES To support all three laboratory disciplines by providing samples, prepared and ready for analysis supplied according to clinical need. 2. Assist in the routine operation and development of the laboratory specimen reception according to changing needs 3. Prioritise and manage own work Following laboratory Standard Operating Procedures/Policies carry out the following tasks:- 4. Receive, sort, and prioritise all samples arriving at Specimen Reception for processing. This includes unpacking, checking, labelling, delivering, preparing and storing samples some of which may be high risk or leaking. 5. Carefully prepare samples for analysis. This may involve centrifuging and separating samples, pipetting serum, measuring and recording volumes and determining sample PH to ensure sample suitability for analysis. 6. Accurately enter and check patient request information onto laboratory computer system. Book in electronically ordered laboratory tests. 7. Deal with problem samples and refer to team leader/senior Laboratory staff if necessary, rejecting unsuitable specimens and entering the information onto the laboratory computer system in accordance with protocol. 8. Communicate information to recognised users regarding sample suitability 9. Prioritise, record and package samples for referral to local and Mainland UK laboratories ensuring samples are packaged correctly and transported without delay. Monitor Mainland UK referral returns. Provide information to service users regarding sample and transport requirements. 10.Maintain adequate stocks of laboratory consumables and report to Senior laboratory staff when replacements are required. 11.Receive, check, deliver and store goods as required 12.Provide cover for preparing orders, collating and despatching reports to users. 13.Operate, monitor and maintain equipment associated with sample preparation and storage including centrifuges, safety cabinets, laboratory pipettes, fridges and freezers etc. Keep records as required. 14.Arrange appointments and prepare bottles and incubator for Cryoglobulins and collect specimens directly from wards and clinics. 15.Measure, weigh and prepare solutions for laboratory use 16.Carry out scanning, archiving and recalling request forms, dealing with patient, client and service users at specimen reception and on the telephone. 17.Carry out housekeeping duties to include removal and disposal of laboratory/confidential waste, laundry of white coats, keeping workplace tidy, disinfecting/cleaning equipment and workplace.
