Cheshire West and Chester Council is looking for a knowledgeable and reliable Senior Finance Assistant to join our Adults Social Care & Public Health finance team.
This is a hands‑on role for someone who enjoys working with budgets, supporting managers to understand their finances, including forecasting and variance analysis, and making sure information is accurate, timely and useful. You’ll play an important part in helping services manage public money responsibly while maintaining strong financial controls. You will be joining a team who are committed to delivering high quality services and improving processes.

The role
We are currently recruiting to a Senior Finance Assistant role supporting Adults Social Care. This is a key role within the finance team, working closely and reporting to a Finance Officer.
Senior Finance Assistants play a vital role in supporting the council’s financial management by providing sound financial advice, delivering financial training, contributing to budget setting and forecasting, and supporting accurate financial reporting, including statutory returns. Working closely with service managers and finance colleagues. The role helps ensure financial decisions are informed, robust and compliant with council policies and procedures.

The role requires strong organisational skills and attention to detail, you will be comfortable working independently and as part of a team, working to deadlines, and confident in building effective working relationships across finance and service teams.
The candidate
We welcome candidates from a range of backgrounds. We’re looking for someone who brings both solid financial skills and a practical, supportive approach to working with others.
You’ll need:
1. AAT qualification or a relevant finance, business or performance qualification
2. Experience of working accurately with financial information and applying technical knowledge reliably
3. Good working knowledge of financial systems and IT, with confidence analysing and presenting data
4. Strong communication skills and the ability to explain financial information clearly
5. The ability to work to deadlines, manage competing priorities and supervise others when required
6. Experience in a local authority or public sector setting is welcome, as is broader post‑qualification experience, but we’re most interested in someone with the right skills, attitude and commitment to public service.

This is a hybrid flexible role, so you’ll split your time between home and council locations across Cheshire West and Chester, depending on the needs of the service.
