Radiology Department Assistant (Fixed Term)

Closing date: 24 April 2026.

Work in the Radiology department assisting radiographers, sonographers and radiologists during imaging examinations and supporting the day‑to‑day running of the department.

Carry out assigned tasks involving direct patient care in support of the practitioner carrying out the procedure.

Assist with clinical and administrative tasks, including patient personal care and hygiene.

Rotate through all radiology areas: ultrasound, CT, fracture clinic, fluoroscopy, A/E, DEXA, interventional suite and the main department.

Support the clinical team during interventional procedures in CT, ultrasound, fluoroscopy and the interventional suite following departmental training.

Understand the implications of the Health and Safety at Work Act and ensure a safe working environment for patients, staff and visitors according to the Trust’s Health and Safety Policy.

Participate in service‑improvement measures as required by departmental needs.


Main duties of the job

* Assist the clinical teams in the day‑to‑day running of the radiology departments at Ashford, St. Peter’s and Woking Hospitals, maintaining efficient daily work lists and workflow of patients.
* Use the Radiology IT systems efficiently to attend patients for their appointments, request patients to come to the department, manage diary entries, book appointments and record notes on the system.
* Prepare the patient for diagnostic examinations, ensuring correct patient identification, confidentiality and data protection.
* Utilise appropriate moving and handling aids to reduce the risk of injury to patients and staff.
* Assist radiologists, specialist sonographers, cytologists and physiotherapists during interventional procedures in ultrasound and fluoroscopy.
* Set up procedure trolleys for guided injections, aspirations, biopsies and other procedures using aseptic technique.
* Assist cytology during fine‑needle aspirations, preparing slides, labeling slides and sending them to pathology for testing.
* Monitor patients’ blood pressure, heart rate and saturations before and after CT procedures, alerting nursing staff of any concerns.
* Act appropriately in a crash call and understand the role in such situations.
* Ensure correct after‑care is given to patients before leaving, provide post‑scan/procedure paperwork, and save checklists in the documents file on CRIS.
* Organise transportation of patients to and from examinations.
* Deal with upset and distressed patients in a positive and comforting manner, maintaining the highest standards of compassionate and professional patient care, with particular attention to privacy and dignity.
* Report any suspicions of abuse to manager or the safeguarding team.
* Respect diversity and promote an inclusive environment.
* Adhere to patient property policy and ensure belongings are not misplaced or lost; use correct channels to return items to owners.
* Clean up after procedures and prepare rooms for the next examination.
* Follow departmental protocols to maintain clinical practice and general housekeeping, including cleanliness of equipment, prevention of hospital‑acquired infections and completion of daily checklists.
* Clean ultrasound machines daily and filters weekly.
* Keep patient waiting areas and changing cubicles clean and tidy, ensuring necessary items (e.g., gowns) are available.
* Reduce waste and manage equipment and consumables responsibly.
* Maintain mandatory and statutory training compliance.
* Support new staff training and induction when requested.
* Abide by the Trust’s uniform policy.
* Carry out any other duties reasonably related to the role when requested by the Department Manager.

Job responsibilities (summary)

The role involves assisting the clinical team, managing patient flow, supporting interventional procedures, monitoring patients, maintaining cleanliness and equipment, ensuring patient care, safety, and confidentiality, and participating in training and service‑improvement initiatives.


Communication

* Inform the clinical team of patients arriving for examination and provide support before, during, and after the examination.
* Answer telephone calls following Trust guidelines and refer to appropriate staff.
* Communicate effectively with patients and relatives in a kind, courteous, sensitive, and discreet manner, maintaining confidentiality.
* Report incidents, accidents, concerns, near misses or complaints via Datix forms when required.
* Build good working relationships with the radiology team and the wider Trust.


General / Other Duties

* Work across the three departments (Chertsey, Ashford, Woking) and participate in a 7‑day service.
* Assist in maintaining correct stock levels of supplies for CT, ultrasound, general X‑ray and fluoroscopy, ensuring appropriate documentation.
* Monitor own work quality to meet required performance standards.
* Remain familiar with Trust and departmental policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines.
* Adhere to IRMER regulations and uphold patient and staff safety.
* Participate in clinical governance, service improvement and audits.
* Pursue strategic goals and participate in PDR/appraisal processes.
* Ensure ongoing personal and professional development and competency in emergency resuscitation, manual handling and fire regulations.
* Support the Trust’s diversity and inclusion strategy.
* Ensure personal conduct aligns with the Trust’s expectations.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* GCSE qualification or equivalent.
* Level 3 qualification in Care or equivalent.


Experience

* Previous experience within the healthcare sector or equivalent.


Knowledge

* Competence with computers and keyboard skills.
* Telephone liaison skills with patients and public.


Skills

* Self‑motivation and ability to work independently and in a team.
* Ability to work under pressure.
* Good communication and people skills.


Other

* Able to demonstrate honesty, reliability and trustworthiness.
* Ability to travel between Trust sites.
