Teacher – Post‑Primary

Principal


Professional Duties of a Teacher

* Lead the development of the Geography and Travel & Tourism Department in line with the School Development Plan.
* Lead departmental self‑evaluation to improve performance and pupil outcomes.
* Monitor, evaluate and review pupil learning; report outcomes to pupils, staff, governors and parents.
* Ensure appropriate interventions for pupils not achieving in line with predictions.
* Support whole‑school intervention programmes by providing information on pupil under‑achievement and departmental support measures.
* Ensure the effective use of resources and maintain an effective working and learning environment.
* Maintain effective schemes of work, reviewed regularly throughout the school year.
* Teach pupils up to Level 3 in Geography and/or Travel & Tourism, developing and supporting their learning so they reach their full potential and achieve high levels of success.
* Exercise general professional duties as required by the Education Authority and school regulations.


Essential Criteria

1. Qualifications: Teachability recognised by the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland; degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification suitable for teaching Geography as the main subject.
2. Experience: Minimum 5 years demonstrable experience teaching Geography and BTEC Travel & Tourism at Key Stage 4 and A Level/Level 3 with positive learning outcomes; evidence of leading departmental development and inclusive planning.
3. Registration: Registered with GTCNI before taking up the post; completion of required pre‑employment checks.
4. Knowledge: Northern Ireland Curriculum, Safeguarding and Child Protection policy, SEND Code of Practice, various teaching strategies, IT systems including digital classroom tools and assessment methods.
5. Skills: Effective teaching and classroom management, inclusive learning environment, teamwork, motivational skills, communication with pupils, colleagues, parents and community.
6. Values: Alignment with the School’s ethos and values.

* Additional experience or qualifications that enhance the candidate’s suitability.


Disclosure of Criminal Background

Applicants recommended for a post involving regulated activity must undertake an Enhanced Disclosure under the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007. The applicant will cover the cost of this certificate.
