We have an opportunity to support the National Monitoring – Monitoring Laboratories as a Scientist at Starcross in the Inorganics team. Working with other Scientists in the team, you will be responsible for the day to day running of the section. Excellent organisational skills and sound decision making will be needed so that key analytical targets are achieved.

You will provide technical leadership to a team of skilled analysts. Using your extensive knowledge of techniques used in the analysis of Inorganics analytes you will need to; improve and develop methodology, assess instrument and method performance, and carry out in-depth quality investigations of non-conforming work. You will also be required to interpret data, answer queries and provide technical advice to our internal and external customers, all to ensure compliance to our ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

A key part of the role is supporting the Team Leaders in the development of the team. By training, providing feedback, coaching and mentoring of team members you will need to ensure understanding, competence of analytical techniques and that associated skills are enhanced.

The team

You will be part of the National Regulation and Monitoring that provides analytical services to the Environment Agency and external customers. Based at Starcross the team, of 26 staff, analyse environmental water samples for Inorganic analytes using a range of different techniques and instrumentation.

Experience/skills Required

Ideally you will be educated to degree level or equivalent and have proven experience of working in a Chemistry laboratory accredited to ISO/IEC 17025. You will be able to demonstrate an understanding of Inorganics analysis. You must enjoy working in a busy team environment, often under pressure to achieve results. You must have a passion for developing people and drive to develop a young team in a busy working environment.

You must have an excellent knowledge of a quality management system with the proven ability to apply this knowledge to deliver continuous improvements to the analysis of environmental samples

You are or have been working towards becoming a Registered Scientist with the Institute of Science and Technology (or similar) as part of your personal development.

Contact and additional information

The role is based on a 37 hour working week. You will be required to work these hours at the Starcross Laboratory. Occasional travel may be required for training/courses. This is a non-hybrid role and based at the laboratory. There are 2 working patterns available Monday to Friday and Tuesday to Saturday. Expected interview date late September.
