Overview
Applications are invited for a one‑year Core Trainee post in General Surgery at the John Radcliffe Hospital (Surgical Emergency Unit – SEU) for August 2026 and February 2027 intakes. The post is within a consultant‑led, high‑volume acute surgical service.
Responsibilities
* Dedicated weeks of emergency operating, management of acute surgical admissions, and participation in the ambulatory surgery clinic under senior supervision.
* Operate in theatre and elective settings across general, colorectal and hepatobiliary surgery, developing operative skills for ST3 application.
* Contribute to audit, quality‑improvement and research programmes associated with the University of Oxford Medical School.
* Attend teaching sessions for medical students and complete portfolio development.
* Share night and weekend duties within contractual limits, with resident night shifts in defined blocks (≈1 week of nights every 3–4 weeks) and weekend work.
* Support the department’s Major Trauma Centre activities and treat complex emergency/trauma presentations.
Qualifications
* Previous experience working within the NHS is essential.
* Strong commitment to learning and patient care, with the ability to work in a fast‑paced emergency environment.
