The Job:
The Herdsmanager will oversee the daily operations of the dairy herd, ensuring efficient, high-performing outcomes across animal health, productivity, and team leadership. This is a senior, hands-on management role requiring in-depth technical knowledge of dairy herd management and the ability to lead a large team.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the daily operations of a large-scale (1,-cow) dairy unit
- Supervise and support a team of 20–30 staff, fostering a culture of teamwork and clear communication
- Oversee all aspects of animal husbandry, including milking, feeding, health checks, and calving
- Maintain high standards of hygiene, animal welfare, and biosecurity
- Coordinate veterinary care, breeding programmes, and herd health strategies
- Work collaboratively with owners and consultants to apply modern, sustainable farming practices
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations
- Maintain accurate records relating to herd health, feed usage, and labour performance

A well established and forward-thinking dairy farm in South West England is seeking a highly experienced Herdsmanager to lead operations on its large-scale unit. With a herd of 1, dairy cows across 2, acres, the farm utilises modern rotary parlour facilities with twice-daily milking, placing strong emphasis on animal welfare, sustainable farming, and innovative technology. A dedicated team of 20–30 staff supports the farm’s high operational standards.
The Candidate:
Essential:
- Substantial experience managing large dairy herds and supervising staff
- Strong leadership and team management skills
- In depth knowledge of dairy cow health, welfare and breeding
- Confident decision-maker under pressure
- Well organised and detail-oriented
- Proficient in the use of milking systems and herd management software
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
Desirable:
- Relevant agricultural or animal husbandry qualifications
- Experience with rotary parlours and modern farm machinery
- Commitment to environmentally sustainable and welfare-led farming practices
