As Resident Medical Officer, you’ll play a crucial role providing on-call cover for Cygnet Hospital Stevenage. This 82-bed hospital offers secure, PICU and acute mental health services for men and women in a purpose-built therapeutic environment focused on positive outcomes and recovery.
With accommodation and meals provided, you’ll be onsite while covering on-call duties (5pm–9am and weekend shifts) and work on a rota of 4 days on / 3 days off. At other times when you cover colleagues’ planned leave, you will work 9am to 5pm.

Responsibilities
* Assess new referrals and inpatients on admission by completing a thorough history and examination, including physical examination.
* Ensure physical health and mental health care of patients while on call, including reviews with the nursing staff.
* Liaise with the Consultant Psychiatrist on call for advice when necessary.
* Prescribe and review medication with support from the Consultant Psychiatrist on call when required.
* Liaise with MDT members, GPs, relatives and other professional agencies as needed.
* Conduct medical reviews on patients in seclusion or long-term segregation.
* Ensure patient notes and documentation are completed in a timely manner.
* Receive regular supervision by the Medical Director or their nominee to assess training needs and support professional development.
* Keep the Medical Director updated on clinical matters arising while on call by submitting appropriate handovers.
* The Specialty Doctor role involves working as a ward doctor to address the physical and mental health needs of inpatients under the clinical supervision of the respective consultant psychiatrist.
* Cover ward doctors’ planned leave between 9am and 5pm when RMO duties are temporarily suspended.
Qualifications
* Fully GMC registered & MBBS (or equivalent) qualified
* Excellent clinical decision-making, sound judgement, ability to manage risk and know when to ask for help
* Experienced in Psychiatry
* Able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
* Strong communication skills; able to interview, assess & treat patients and write clear, comprehensive medical notes
