In-House Legal Counsel - Data protection & data privacy

£60K-£70K + bonus
The role:
* Provide first-line BAU data protection & privacy advice to the business on defined topics, escalating complex issues to the DPO as needed.
* Own day-to-day management of the DPO public email inbox, working with the Operations team for prioritisation and timely resolution in line with SLAs.
* Assist the Operations team with escalated data subject rights requests and escalated complaints, ensuring consistent responses within strict SLAs and providing advice as appropriate.
* Assist the Legal team with pre-litigation and litigation related tasks.
* Support the business in maintaining existing Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs), providing expert guidance to the business owner.
* Maintain the Record of Processing Activities (ROPA), coordinating with process owners and ensuring audit-ready evidence is retained.
* Review, update, and maintain standardised external assurance responses and tailored responses when assurance requests go beyond baseline.
* Support the periodic update of the Handbooks, working with the DPO on preparing draft revisions and recommendations.
* Support incident/breach response: assist with triage, containment documentation, regulatory assessments, and lessons learned under the direction of the DPO.
* Support the review of data protection & privacy related contract clauses from members and suppliers, coordinating with Sales, Security, and Senior Legal Counsel as appropriate.
* Maintain clear records of decisions, rationale, and advice to reduce regulatory risk and ensure the organisation can “show its workings” to regulators.
Education/Qualification
* UK-qualified solicitor
Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required
* Solid knowledge of UK GDPR, DPA 2018, and PECR, along with relevant case law and ICO guidance.
* Strong legal drafting, analytical thinking, and attention to detail; able to translate complex requirements into clear, practical advice.
* Experience of previous in-house legal experience, an advantage
