Medical Equipment Management – Role Overview
MEMS provide total medical equipment management services to Basildon, Southend and Mid Essex Hospitals. The role ensures that medical equipment operates effectively and safely with minimal downtime. Equipment covered includes complex electrical, electronic, mechanical, computer and medical gas systems.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide support to electrical and electronic medical equipment, including scheduled PPM, servicing, repair, calibration and acceptance testing.
* Commission, calibrate, deploy and maintain a wide range of complex medical devices (infusion devices, patient monitoring, defibrillators, etc.).
* Investigate and test medical devices, diagnose faults and communicate results to users, colleagues and suppliers.
* Maintain accurate equipment maintenance history records for audit, quality and performance monitoring.
* Ensure all duties are delivered safely, professionally and in accordance with policies, procedures and health & safety documentation.
* Prepare medical devices for deployment from the Medical Equipment Library and respond to faults for patient‑connected equipment.
* Collaborate with clinical and technical staff to deploy devices safely and provide training to staff and patients on effective use.
* Liaise with suppliers for technical and commercial information related to maintenance and evaluation.
* Solve first line support issues for instrumentation interfaces to specialist clinical computer systems, working with IT as required.
* Monitor stocks and initiate orders to maintain device parts and accessories.
* Contribute to planned maintenance schedules and section procedures, and participate in departmental meetings for continuous improvement.
* Prioritise and plan workload to respond to urgent requests and review equipment and job audits to meet quality targets.
* Supervise, monitor and train junior MEMS staff, providing mentorship.
* Participate in the MEMS on‑call rota for out‑of‑hours cover.

This role supports medical equipment management across the Trust’s four renal dialysis units and other clinical areas, aiming to deliver excellent local service and improve patient well‑being.
