We are looking for a passionate and skilled School Nurse or Health Visitor to join our Public Health Nursing Service, Children in Care team, in Barnsley. In this role, you will deliver the Healthy Child Programme, providing evidence-based care that promotes health, reduces inequalities, and safeguards children, young people, and families.

The Children in Care SCPHN will work as an integral part of a multi-agency service to provide a seamless pathway for Children in Care and Care Leavers. The primary focus of this role will be to undertake statutory health assessments, develop and undertake age-appropriate health promotion advice, attendance at statutory reviews, and the delivery of the healthy child programme with children and young people in care to improve their life chances and health outcomes. The post holder will work with children in care, unaccompanied asylum-seeking children, children with complex health needs, care leavers and their parents and/or carers. Following national and local guidelines, plan, organise, deliver, and evaluate comprehensive health assessments to assess and formulate the complex needs of a looked after child or young person using evidence-based knowledge to develop health plans towards improving the long-term health outcomes for looked after children and will act as a resource providing health advice to children, carers, and professionals.


Main duties of the job

To succeed in this role, you will need to be an experienced Specialist Community Public Health Nurse School Nurse or Health Visitor, with experience working 0-19, with sound knowledge and understanding of the Healthy Child Programme and related policies and pathways. You will need to be able to identify risk, assess, plan, and deliver care, providing evidenced based interventions to support children, young people, and care leavers within Barnsley. Be a highly motivated, innovative, and adaptable practitioner who is committed to taking a child centred approach with the ability to identify health needs as early as possibility and improve health and wellbeing by promoting health, preventing ill health, and reducing inequalities. You will need to be able to plan and prioritise your own workload, and the ability to travel to a range of venues and settings is essential. We are seeking an experienced nurse who can contribute to ongoing service improvement initiatives demonstrating a commitment that the voice and lived experience of the child and young person is at the heart of all decision making and clinical care planning. Experience of safeguarding and multi-agency working is also key to the role. The team also take responsibility for children placed out of borough. This includes liaison with other agencies and services, coordinating effective care and acting as an advocate where necessary. If you are not dual trained, there is a willingness to complete the extended practice.

Job responsibilities

To provide evidence-based public health nursing practice that promotes and improves health and addresses inequalities at individual, family and community level for children who are in care and care leavers. Lead the delivery of the healthy child programme to improve health and wellbeing of children in care and safeguard children, young people, families and carers. Develop and implement structured interventions for children and families with complex needs including assessments, appropriate management of risks and providing professional and clinical supervision to other team members.


Person Specification


Experience

* Experience of integrated working/ multi-agency working
* Experience of public health related work/ leading public health initiatives
* Experience of working with complex safeguarding, vulnerable children and families
* Experience of working in a community setting with complex vulnerable children and families
* Evidence of compliance with professional regulations Standards of Proficiency
* Experience of preceptoring and mentoring, developing and leading training
* Experience of managing staff


General and Special Knowledge

* Knowledge and understanding of the Healthy Child Programme and related policies and pathways
* Knowledge and understanding of public health, preventative strategy and local National Safeguarding Policies and Procedures
* Sound knowledge of professional accountability and professional regulations requirements for continued registration
* Demonstrate in depth knowledge and understanding of the impact of long term health and social issues and safeguarding
* Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of clinical governance and its implications for practice
* Knowledge and understanding of principles and benefits of reflection and use of models and tools to enhance understanding of complex clinical practice and safeguarding supervision.


Skills and Abilities

* Ability to plan and prioritise workload with the ability to work autonomously and independently within a changing and flexible work environment
* Skills in undertaking health needs assessments, planning and evaluating interventions. With the ability to take lead role in complex child protection, child in need and looked after children and direct, support and supervise the other teams members to support those families
* Ability to use reflective practice techniques to evaluate, present and critically analyse own practice
* Ability to line manage and supervise other team members, organising and delegating as appropriate
* Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish effective working relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders, children families and carers as well as ability to constructively challenge when required
* Demonstrate leadership skills and interpersonal skills with an ability to work effectively in partnership with team, other professionals and agencies
* Ability to lead and develop innovative practice
* Demonstrate skills in delivering effective clinical decision making in complex scenarios and to make decisions when there are conflicts and tensions.


Additional Requirements

* Demonstrate a full commitment to develop information technology skills as appropriate to undertake public health nursing duties
* Ability to undertake travel in connection with the post duties
* Willing to undertake training and continuous professional development in connection with the post
* Willing to work flexibly in accordance with the policies and procedures to meet the operational needs of the service and the council.

Qualifications

* Specialist Community Public Health Nurse level 6 or above qualification
* Evidence of continuous professional development in safeguarding children to level 3
* Recorded Nurse Prescriber
* Willing to undertake SCPHN additional field of practice (extended practice course)
