Job overview

We are seeking an experienced qualified Reporting Radiographer to aid in the advancement of our Reporting Service and ensure that scans are reported with the utmost excellence within the appropriate time frame.

You should possess extensive experience in establishing governance and implementing best practices in accordance with professional standards.

As part of this role, you will be expected to meet the four pillars of advanced practice, conduct diagnostic imaging and maintain relevant records, supervise junior Radiographers, Assistant Practitioners, Apprentices and students, assist in teaching SpRs, and participate in research and audit.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:

1. Undertake independent image interpretation in line with their scope of practice with the view to provide detailed written or verbal reports to the referring clinicians, to determine diagnosis where applicable, as part of the delegated radiographers extended role.
2. Organise workload in areas of delegated responsibility on a daily basis, maximising efficiency using available resources and managing patient priority as appropriate.

Conduct examinations, producing high quality diagnostic images, across a range of modalities, ensuring safe practice is carried out in accordance with departmental protocols and in line with their clinical scope of practice.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

3. To provide independent, timely, accurate and appropriate clinical reports for a range of radiography examinations (plain film/MRI/CT) from a range of referral sources as appropriate to their scope of practice
4. To practice at the standards and following the responsibilities expected of a reporting radiographer according to local reporting radiographer policy and procedures.
5. To practice safely in a radiation working environment in accordance with IR(ME)R 2017 legislation.
6. To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of their own work. To act as an independent radiographic practitioner and maintain professional standards defined by the HCPC and College of Radiographers (Registration and Code of Conduct)
7. To assess the clinical justification of Radiography referrals, in line with national regulations IR(ME)R 2017 and local guidelines, where appropriate
8. To autonomously carry out radiographic imaging using ionising radiation, acting as an operator under IR(ME)R 2017, and/or high strength magnetic field, ensuring the production of high quality images to enable accurate diagnoses whilst minimising radiation
9. To be able to interpret Clinician’s requirements and determine the appropriate protocol, to liaise with the referral source where clarification is needed and to act as a point of advice for referrers.
10. To monitor and maintain a safe working environment with specific regard to quality assurance, Infection control and general health and safety issues.
11. To provide an efficient and effective service to both patients and other staff, whilst maintaining a high standard of patient care.
12. To ensure appropriate infection control measures are undertaken including personal protection, appropriate cleaning of equipment (including blood and other body fluids) and changing of linen
13. To ensure equipment is maintained in good working order, to trouble-shoot equipment faults, liaise with equipment manufactures in the event of equipment failure and to ensure records concerning these events are completed, informing the modality lead superintendent and service users as appropriate.
14. To ensure all examinations have been recorded accurately, as per protocol, on the radiology information systems and relevant trust-wide platforms, adhering to the data protection act
15. To support the radiation protection lead, alongside radiation protection supervisors, to continuously evaluate monitoring systems and practices according to local rules.
16. To work as part of the Imaging workforce as required
17. Provide detailed written and/or verbal reports to the referring clinicians on the interpretation of images and adapt technique where appropriate
18. To act as a source of information and advice for peers, junior staff, student, referrers and medical staff within the department
19. Establish, implement, maintain and develop an appropriate level of professional knowledge and understanding to enable the safe delivery of practice.
20. To authorise and vet requests for specialist area, using departmental guidelines, efficiently managing any requests not suitable for authorisation
21. Work closely with Doctors and other medical staff to ensure protocols are adhered to.
22. To maintain close links with non-medical referrers and, at the request of the modality lead Superintendent and Consultant Radiologist, ensure they receive adequate training regarding their role as referrer and documented evidence is kept regarding the same for audit purposes.
23. To have appropriate clinical knowledge to prioritise patient workload in order of clinical need.

25. To act as a point of advice for patients’ enquiries regarding their referral
26. To professionally judge the quality of the images they and junior staff produce and ensure that it is fit for purpose, acting on any images that do not meet the required standard

Qualifications

Essential criteria

27. BSc(Hons) Radiography, DCR(D) Diploma of the College of Radiographers or Equivalent
28. PgCert/PgDip/MSc (or equivalent ) plain film reporting
29. HCPC/ Governing body professional registration

Desirable criteria

Experience

Essential criteria

31. Relevant post qualification experience as a senior radiographer in multiple modalities as demonstrated by portfolio
32. Experience of monitoring of junior staff

Desirable criteria

33. Previous experience in a reporting radiographer role
34. Experience of teaching and supervision in radiology
35. Management experience within the NHS including staff management and leadership

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria

36. Up to date knowledge of general imaging techniques
37. Knowledge of standards and responsibilities expected of a reporting radiographer according to local reporting radiographer policy and procedure
38. Knowledge of DATIX, PACS and Soliton
39. Communicate effectively to ensure high standards of care, treatment, service or support
40. Able to provide a customer focussed service
41. Ability to organise and prioritise work and that of others
42. Ability to work under pressure and as a team member
43. Good PC skills and be able to analyse statistics objectively
44. Effective verbal and written communication skills
