Our mission is to deliver joy in every shop, through unbeatable choice, unrivalled service and reassuringly good value.
We’re Ocado Retail, a market-leading, joint venture between Ocado Group and M&S and the world’s largest dedicated online supermarket. Not only is Ocado.com the only place to shop a full range of M&S food online, it’s also the home to the widest online supermarket range in the UK and champion of small, independent brands. We’re also the brains behind, our same-day grocery delivery service.
About the team and the role
Data & Insight
Data & insight is at the heart of the Ocado retail grocery team. From advising the buying team on promotions to run and products to range, to understanding how our customers buy their weekly shopping, through to building models for new loyalty schemes and personalised marketing campaigns, data and insight are critical to everything we do. We want our analysts to become experts in their business areas as well as have the skills needed to produce great insight. We therefore run regular training sessions to help develop the key skills needed – choosing visualisations, presentation skills, SQL, Tableau, statistics, and more.
The role
The Seasonal Trading Insight Analyst role will directly support our trade operations team, in helping ensure that the Ocado offer is always kept relevant to the time of year in which we are trading, and brilliantly in tune with the calendar events which are important to our customers. The role will also support weekly trade promotions planning and reporting, using data and insights to ensure that our promotional offering is competitive, and delivering results, and that compliance to our promotional processes is consistently adhered to.
Although the ability to extract and manipulate data from our databases, using SQL is critical, the demands of the role go well beyond those foundational technical skills. You will be expected to work with stakeholders to understand requirements, and scope projects, breaking more complex challenges into key milestones and managing your time to ensure deadlines are met. You will apply critical thinking to develop the best analytical approach to get to easy-to-understand, actionable insights and recommendations. Where appropriate, you will partner with insight colleagues in data science, reporting, customer, and merchandising to import expertise in such areas as statistics, predictive analytics, data visualisation, and automation.
This is a rewarding role, which will require you to learn at pace, in a sometimes challenging, but always highly supportive environment, whilst delivering real value to the business, almost from day one.
What you’ll do
1. Interrogate internal databases to provide recommendations to the trading team, and Ocado Retail’s senior leadership. This will involve shorter term, quick turnaround questions to help inform tactical decision making, and longer term projects shaping the future of Ocado Retail’s commercial strategy
2. Visualise data and present insight in a concise manner with presentations tailored to the technical level of the audience
3. Interact directly with stakeholders to scope, project manage, and complete analytical projects to better understand why customers buy what they do, and how we are able to influence their decisions with range, price, and promotions- specifically through the lens of events and seasonality
4. Work as part of a team to draw out the commercial implications of analysis
5. Potentially line manage a graduate on placement in the team (this is not guaranteed, as it depends on the choices our graduate cohort make about which areas of the business they would like to gain experience in)
Example Projects
6. Leading meal deal analysis, understanding how best to optimise the deals & product mix for the best sales and profit results
7. Leading the seasonal range analysis, optimising the data input within the current sign off process, supporting in season sales reporting & responsible for full post event data review
8. Seasonal Post Campaign Analyses - supporting the seasonal team, and working alongside the category insight teams to deliver a review of our seasonal performance and making recommendations for the future
9. Developing methodology to assess the right level of stock to buy for key seasonal events like Xmas and Easter, explaining the logic in a persuasive way that can be understood by non-technical stakeholders, and ultimately being a key voice in seasonal buy quantity decisions
Who you are
Essential:
10. SQL - you will either have some prior experience, or an eagerness and aptitude to learn at pace (with extensive training and support in the first weeks in role)
11. Numeracy - demonstrated by one or more of: i. a good grade at Maths A level, ii. a STEM degree, iii. significant working experience with data and analysis
12. Critical thinking and problem solving
13. Commercial awareness - ability to relate numbers in a database with what they mean in the real world, and to pick up quickly which metrics are the most important determinants of what different areas of the business are trying to achieve
14. Excellent Microsoft Office/Google Suite skills
15. Managing relationships/influencing across multiple stakeholders of varying levels of seniority
16. Helping stakeholders identify and clearly define the most important questions, as well as providing data-driven answers to them
17. Data visualisation and ‘science communication’ skills - making the complex seem simple
18. Ability to juggle multiple responsibilities and be effective in prioritising workload, especially around busy seasonal periods
19. Process focus, and basic automation technical skills, using tools like Googlesheets, and/or Tableau
Advantageous:
20. Experience in a retail, e-commerce or FMCG consumer-facing business, especially experience managing seasonality and events in a retail environment
Behaviours we would like you to demonstrate:
21. Taking a collaborative approach in working, and sharing your knowledge with the wider team around you
22. Being curious and keen to learn and develop yourself
23. Listening to others and understanding the business questions/challenges that they have and what is important to them
24. Proactivity and taking personal responsibility - identifying projects that could make a positive difference to the business and then taking ownership to get them done
