Job Overview
The Autism Advisory Teacher will work within the Education Authority Local Impact Teams, delivering training, offering advice and support to school staff and parents/carers, and working directly with autistic children and young people across all ages. The role reports to the Local Impact Team Manager and is responsible for delivering the Programme of Offer within Local Impact Teams.
Responsibilities
* Advise and support staff working in schools, nurseries and preschool settings.
* Provide advice to schools to facilitate staff in addressing the particular learning, social, communication and developmental needs of autistic pupils.
* Work closely with class teachers, Special Needs Co‑ordinators (SENCos) and Learning Support teachers to develop effective strategies and interventions.
* Encourage a coordinated approach to a pupil’s needs.
* Contribute to the implementation of a range of interventions.
* Devise and assist the implementation of an individualised learning programme for autistic children and young people.
* Facilitate the delivery of appropriate support packages.
* Work directly with selected individuals.
* Provide block of direct pupil support for those requiring more specific assistance.
* Monitor, assess and review a pupil’s progress, provide reports at regular intervals.
* Develop autistic‑specific training programmes.
* Contribute to the delivery of training courses for teachers, assistants, parents/carers and other professionals.
* Promote parental involvement and liaison between home and school.
* Write educational advice in respect of pupils with SEN under relevant legislation.
* Engage in multidisciplinary meetings to meet the needs of individual pupils.
* Remain informed of current approaches, teaching strategies and resources for autistic children.
* Undertake any other related duties as required by the Education Authority.
Essential Criteria
* Be a qualified teacher recognised by the Department of Education to teach in grant‑aided schools.
* Have a minimum of three years’ demonstrable experience directly teaching pupils with SEN arising from a diagnosis of autism in mainstream, special or support settings.
* Have demonstrable experience of a range of evidence‑based interventions applicable in school settings.
* Have experience working collaboratively with a range of professionals to support children with SEN.
* Demonstrable knowledge of appropriate teaching strategies and approaches to meet the learning needs of autistic children and young people.
* Have access to a suitable vehicle or an appropriate alternative form of transport to meet mobility requirements of the post.
Additional Essential Criteria (Interview Stage)
* Evidence of ability to use appropriate teaching strategies and support packages in school settings.
* High degree of interpersonal skills, initiative, logical working and precision.
* Ability to engage and communicate sensitively and professionally with families, staff and other professionals.
* Ability to work as a member of a team and strong commitment to teamwork.
* Ability to manage a complex workload and prioritise to meet deadlines, particularly when addressing challenging situations and change.
* Ability to build trust and strong working relationships with stakeholders and colleagues from other agencies.
* Evidence of how experience and approach to work reflect the Education Authority’s values and ethos.
Desirable Criteria
* Completed accredited training on two of the following: TEACCH, PECS, Attention Autism, PEP‑3, SCERTS, Interactive Play, Intensive Interaction, Zones of Regulation, Solihull, Post Graduate Certificate in Autism Studies, Masters of Science (Autism Spectrum Disorders), Masters of Education (Autism Spectrum Disorders).
* Experience of providing advisory support/training to school staff, parents, colleagues or other professionals.
* Evidence of commitment to equality, excellence and equality of access to education services.
Legal and Disclosure
The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 defines working directly with children or young people or in specified places as ‘regulated activity’. In the event that a post involves regulated activity the Education Authority will be required to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background. The successful candidate will be expected to meet the cost of the Enhanced Disclosure Certificate.
