Job Description: Secondary SEN Teaching Assistant (PRU) Job Title: Secondary SEN Teaching Assistant Location: Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) - Secondary Phase Reports to: SENCO / Class Teacher / Head of Centre Contract Type: Full-time / Term-time only DBS Requirement: Enhanced DBS on the update service - essential Purpose of the Role To support the learning, social, and emotional development of pupils with Special Educational Needs and behavioural challenges within a PRU setting. This includes young people at risk of exclusion, or those with Social, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties (SEBD), ADHD, ASD traits, or other additional needs. You will work closely with teaching staff, pastoral teams, and external agencies to promote positive learning experiences and personal growth for all pupils. Key Duties and Responsibilities Classroom Support Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils with SEN, SEBD, and ADHD. Assist in implementing individual education plans (IEPs), behaviour plans, and learning programmes as directed by the teacher or SENCO. Support the teacher with planning, preparing, and adapting differentiated materials to meet learners needs. Help manage classroom behaviour in line with school policy, using positive reinforcement and de-escalation techniques. Encourage pupil engagement, confidence, and motivation during lessons. Support teaching staff with practical classroom tasks, displays, and resource preparation. Behaviour and Emotional Support Implement strategies to support pupils with emotional regulation and self-control. Use trauma-informed and restorative approaches to build trust and promote positive relationships. Provide calm and consistent responses to challenging behaviour, using the school's behaviour management system effectively. Supervise pupils during non-classroom times (breaks, transitions, trips) to maintain safety and engagement. Pastoral Duties Act as a key worker or mentor for identified pupils, liaising with teachers, parents/carers, and external professionals. Support the development of pupil social skills, resilience, and emotional literacy. Record and report behavioural incidents and concerns accurately and promptly. Promote inclusion and celebrate diversity across the school community. Administrative and Team Duties Maintain confidential pupil records, supporting the SENCO in tracking progress and outcomes. Attend staff briefings, CPD sessions, and team meetings as required. Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, counsellors, and youth support staff to deliver a holistic provision. Adhere to all safeguarding and child protection policies, actively promoting pupil welfare. Person Specification Essential Criteria Experience: Minimum of 6 months classroom-based experience in a UK secondary school / PRU environment. SEN Knowledge: Experience supporting pupils with SEBD, ADHD, and other additional needs. Youth Work: Practical experience of engaging vulnerable or disaffected young people aged 11-16. Qualifications: GCSEs (A-C/9-4) in English and Maths or equivalent. Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant or Youth Work qualification desirable. DBS: Enhanced DBS check registered on the Update Service. Skills and Abilities Strong interpersonal and communication skills with pupils and staff. Ability to remain calm and consistent under pressure. Skilled in de-escalation, positive behaviour management, and restorative practice. Understanding of trauma-informed approaches and safeguarding procedures. Flexible and adaptable to the varying needs of PRU pupils. Good timekeeping, reliability, and organisation. Competent in using ICT for basic administrative and teaching support tasks. Desirable Criteria Training in Team Teach, MAPA, or equivalent behaviour management methods. Knowledge of the national curriculum and differentiated teaching techniques. Additional qualifications in SEN, counselling, or mentoring young people. Working Conditions Based in a PRU environment supporting students with emotional and behavioural challenges. May include some outreach work or off-site learning support. Requires resilience, empathy, consistency, and a proactive attitude.
