Substation Fitter Apprentice Install, inspect, repair, and maintain electrical plant apparatus in substations Work with equipment such as switches, isolators, circuit breakers, batteries, and transformers Carry out fault repairs and maintenance in line with Health & Safety standards Learn from experienced team members and contribute to real-world projects ️ Cable Jointer Apprentice Install, maintain, and repair underground electrical cables Support the flow of electricity from substations to towns and cities Work outdoors in all weather conditions as part of a skilled team Play a vital role in powering homes and businesses across the region As a Substation Fitter & Cable Jointer Apprentice with Electricity North West, you’ll receive world-class technical training, hands-on experience, and professional development that will power your career for life. Your apprenticeship combines classroom learning, practical training at our purpose-built Electricity North West Training Academy, and on-the-job experience alongside qualified engineers working across our live electricity network. The programme typically lasts 2–3 years, leading to nationally recognised Level 3 qualifications in both Power Industry Substation Fitting and Power Industry Distribution Cable Jointing. What you’ll learn At our Training Academy: You’ll start with an induction and safety introduction, including a three-day residential event to get to know your fellow apprentices and our business. You’ll then move into structured classroom and workshop sessions covering: How the electricity network operates — from power generation to local distribution. Electrical principles, fault-finding, and safe systems of work. Industry regulations such as the Electricity Safety, Quality & Continuity Regulations (ESQCR). Practical training in jointing, terminating and testing cables, and maintaining substation equipment. Health & safety procedures, environmental awareness, and risk control. On-the-job experience: You’ll work under the guidance of experienced mentors and craft professionals across our region. As a Substation Fitter, you’ll learn to maintain, test and install equipment in substations — including switchgear, transformers, earthing systems, and batteries — ensuring our network runs safely and efficiently. As a Cable Jointer, you’ll work on underground electricity cables, learning to install, connect, repair, and test both low-voltage (LV) and high-voltage (HV) systems up to 11kV. You’ll gain skills in cable excavation, electrical testing, isolation, and jointing techniques, all while working safely and efficiently in real environments. Study for: City & Guilds Level 2 qualification Level 3 Power Network Apprenticeship Completing the Substation Fitter & Cable Jointer Apprenticeship with Electricity North West opens the door to a long-term, secure, and rewarding career in the power industry. Once qualified, you’ll step into a full-time role as a Cable Jointer or Substation Fitter, working independently on live electricity networks that power homes and businesses across the region. From there, you can progress into senior technical or leadership roles such as Lead Cable Jointer, Senior Substation Technician, Field Supervisor, or Team Leader. With further training, some apprentices move into engineering, design, or project management positions. Your qualifications are nationally recognised, giving you valuable skills sought after across the UK energy sector.
