Offer description

We are proud to be One Team at East Midlands Railway (EMR). We are passionate about keeping people safe, delighting our customers, doing the right thing and putting customers at the heart of our sustainable railway for the East Midlands. With over 2,600 employees, our people are the reason we are so successful. Nine times accredited as a Top Employer, we value our people and are dedicated to making sure that everybody feels empowered to bring their authentic self to work.

We have three exciting opportunities to join #TeamEMR as Technical or Performance Engineer based at:

1. Nottingham: Eastcroft Depot
2. Derby: EMR HQ and Etches Park Depot

About the role

We’re seeking proactive Rolling Stock Engineers to drive both the technical and operational performance of our fleet. You’ll provide hands-on engineering support to our own production teams and third-party maintainers, ensuring safety, reliability, and maintainability. This includes maintaining and optimising vehicle VMIs, implementing engineering changes to improve performance, and conducting thorough root cause investigations into defects.

Alongside your technical expertise, you’ll take ownership of fleet performance KPIs—overseeing root cause data collection, validation, analysis, target setting, and reporting. You’ll develop and implement performance improvement plans, working closely with Operations, Network Rail, leasing companies, suppliers, and other stakeholders to deliver measurable reliability improvements. Your role will bridge the gap between engineering and operations, ensuring that projects, processes, and partnerships align to deliver the best possible service to our customers.

Key responsibilities include:

3. Own all Fleet Engineering activities and vehicle maintenance documentation, ensuring safety, compliance, reliability, availability, and customer outcomes.
4. Set, monitor, and review KPIs for technical and safety performance, ensuring that all safety-related events are investigated and corrective actions implemented.
5. Analyse statistical, technical and operational data to identify technical and performance issues, and develop solutions or mitigations to improve reliability, safety, train presentation, and asset performance.
6. Manage all engineering modifications, changes, and NIRs, ensuring full compliance with regulations, correct documentation, and approval processes.
7. Support depot and third-party maintainers with technical advice, coaching, and guidance, holding external teams to account for delivery to agreed standards.
8. Prepare investment cases to support performance and lifecycle cost improvements, working with ROSCOs to ensure best value from fleet leases and maintenance strategies.
9. Develop and deliver Performance Improvement Plans, holding action owners accountable and reporting on progress and impact.
10. Engage with Network Rail and other stakeholders via Joint Performance Boards, leading all fleet-relevant aspects of performance strategy, funding opportunities, and collaborative projects.
11. Validate and maintain the integrity of fleet performance data (MP701D/MTIN) and ensure accurate recording of defects and incidents.
12. Lead or participate in joint investigations into performance issues, including people/machine interface challenges, and develop technical solutions with stakeholders.
13. Chair operations forums to ensure effective communication between fleet teams, drivers, control, and onboard teams.
14. Promote and deliver innovation, adopting industry best practice and integrating improvements into digital solutions where possible.
15. Deputise for the Fleet Engineering Manager, Fleet Performance Manager, and other colleagues as required.

About you

16. Chartered Engineer (or working towards) with a degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.
17. At least 5 years in a technical, engineering, or operational railway environment, ideally in a matrix management structure.
18. Strong knowledge of rail vehicles, rolling stock systems, and industry standards.
19. Experience in maintenance optimisation, engineering modifications, and performance improvement.
20. Skilled in data analysis, problem-solving, and project delivery.
21. Proficient in Microsoft Office and familiar with rail applications such as R2, Compass, and Gemini.
22. Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and teamwork skills.
23. Experience introducing new fleets of trains (desirable).

As well as a competitive salary, we’ll also offer you:

24. An excellent defined benefit Railway pension scheme
25. 32 days’ holiday in the first 2 years; moving up to 34 days’ thereafter
26. Free First Class duty travel on the EMR network
27. Free standard leisure travel on the EMR network and Train Operating Companies under Transport UK & LNER and 75% discount on national leisure travel (inc partner and dependants)
28. Friends and Family discounted tickets on the EMR network
29. Various training opportunities
30. Employee benefits portal with access to generous discounts, Cycle 2 Work Scheme …and many more!

At EMR we want to proactively embrace diversity across our workforce and recognise that we are under-represented in terms of females and ethnic minority groups. We’re therefore taking positive steps to promote a positive and inclusive culture; we welcome applications from those that identify with these groups to better represent our communities.
