Job Description:
The salary for this role is £56,596 (inclusive of a Specialist Allowance). Onsite working is expected, but hybrid options can be discussed based on business needs.
This role is based at: Culham, Oxfordshire
Employees must complete an online BPSS check, including DBS checks and open source data searches.
The Role
We seek a Senior Control & Instrumentation (C&I) Engineer to lead the design, development, and delivery of control and safety systems for fusion energy facilities. Responsibilities include managing work packages, solving technical challenges, leading studies, producing documentation, and overseeing staff and contractors.
You will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, manage workload, and address complex technical issues independently. This is an opportunity to impact clean energy innovation in a dynamic environment.
Key Accountabilities:
* Lead C&I projects from concept to detailed design, ensuring safety and cost-effectiveness.
* Own control and safety systems including installation, software, testing, and maintenance.
* Develop technical documentation such as system architectures and control philosophies, coding in Siemens TIA S7, PCS7, LabVIEW, ABB 800xA, Python, C++.
* Collaborate across disciplines for requirements gathering, HAZOP assessments, design reviews, and lifecycle management.
* Supervise teams and ensure compliance, managing contractors, electrical work, project milestones, and safety standards.
Qualifications
Essential:
* A degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or equivalent, or HND with extensive experience.
* Strong practical knowledge of PLC and SCADA systems, EC&I documents such as SLDs, P&IDs, C&Es, schematics.
* Experience with safety procedures, risk assessments, permits, and isolations.
* Proven experience in designing, installing, and testing Control & Instrumentation systems.
Desirable:
* Chartered Engineer status.
* Functional Safety qualifications (e.g., TÜV Rheinland FSEng).
* Experience with Siemens, LabVIEW, ABB 800xA or similar systems.
* Experience in scientific/engineering environments with strict safety protocols.
* Supervisory experience.
