About Youth College

Youth College is an SLA‑based alternative educational provision delivered at South Tyneside College, part of Tyne Coast College. The programme supports 65 Year 10/11 learners who have experienced barriers to success in mainstream education, including disrupted attendance, anxiety, mental health needs, SEND, and difficulties engaging with a traditional curriculum.

Learners attend Youth College from a wide range of schools and local authorities and benefit from a highly personalised, trauma‑informed approach which combines GCSE study, vocational qualifications, enrichment and intensive pastoral support.

Our provision has a strong and growing reputation for re‑engaging young people, improving attendance, and securing positive post‑16 destinations.

-----------------------------------

The Role

We are seeking a committed and compassionate Youth College Teacher (Maths) to join our specialist team. This role is suited to an education professional who is passionate about working with vulnerable young people and who believes in the power of education to transform lives.

You will deliver high‑quality teaching alongside strong pastoral support, working closely with colleagues, home schools and external agencies to ensure learners can succeed both academically and personally.

You will deliver 15 lessons (total) per week of GCSE Maths to 5 groups of 13 learners. Our small group sizes, combined with the effective pastoral support allow the staff/students to really get know each other; thus enabling an effective, fun and meaningful learning environment.

-----------------------------------

Key Responsibilities

* Deliver engaging and inclusive teaching as part of the Youth College curriculum (GCSE Maths)
* Re‑engage learners who have experienced barriers to mainstream education
* Support learners’ attendance, behaviour, wellbeing and safeguarding needs
* Contribute to a strong pastoral and enrichment offer that prepares learners for post‑16 destinations
* Work collaboratively with the Youth College team, Attendance Welfare Officer, home schools and external services
* Support learners to develop essential life skills, employability skills and confidence
* Maintain high expectations while demonstrating empathy, consistency and professionalism
* When not teaching in the classroom directly, be on hand in the learner base or other Youth College classrooms to support when required by the Youth College Manager.
-----------------------------------

What We Are Looking For

We welcome applications from professionals with experience in:

* Secondary education, alternative provision, FE or SEND settings
* Working with young people with complex needs, including SEMH and anxiety
* Delivering engaging learning in challenging but rewarding environments

You will also demonstrate:

* A strong commitment to safeguarding and learner wellbeing
* The ability to build positive, trusting relationships with young people
* Excellent communication and teamwork skills
* Resilience, flexibility and a solution‑focused mindset
* A belief that every young person can succeed with the right support

Appropriate teaching, vocational or support qualifications are desirable (dependent on role).

-----------------------------------

Why Join Youth College?

* Be part of a high‑performing provision with excellent outcomes
* Work in a supportive, experienced and passionate team
* Make a meaningful difference to the lives of young people
* Access ongoing CPD and professional development
* Benefit from strong systems for safeguarding, pastoral care and learner support

Impact Highlights:

* 99% positive post‑16 destinations (three consecutive years from 2022-2025)
* Strong GCSE and vocational achievement
* High retention and learner satisfaction
* Robust safeguarding and pastoral systems
* Attendance rates that are significantly higher compared to (state-funded) AP setting nationally.
