This Design Engineer position is with an established engineering business in the Ferndown area, working on bespoke mechanical product solutions within a specialist sector. They combine design and manufacturing capability, giving engineers exposure to detailed design, production support, and real-world product delivery in a collaborative team environment.
They’re looking for a highly motivated Design Engineer to support the development and refinement of product concepts through detailed design and testing, ensuring functionality, reliability and manufacturability. Industry-specific experience would be an advantage, but training can be provided. What matters most is strong CAD capability, sheet metal/product design experience, and the ability to translate customer requirements into practical engineering solutions.
The Design Engineer role
As a Design Engineer, you’ll play a key role in developing and refining product concepts through detailed design work and engineering support.
This Design Engineer role combines CAD design, product development, and day-to-day liaison with manufacturing, suppliers and customers. You’ll be involved in producing buildable designs, supporting production through the shop floor, and helping maintain quality and environmental standards within your role.
Day-to-day responsibilities of a Design Engineer
Produce CAD drawings, including Inventor drawings
Design sheet metal products and create 3D models including internal components
Create flat patterns from 3D models for component manufacture (including CNC punching and folding processes)
Liaise with manufacturing teams, suppliers and customers
Interpret customer requirements and ensure specifications are viable
Manage orders and production of product lines through the shop floor, ensuring delivery on time and within budget
Work on your own initiative
Work to and meet deadlines
Maintain and improve ISO quality and environmental processes within the role
Progress toward building and managing your own team over time
What they’re looking for - Design Engineer
Proven experience in mechanical or systems design
Proficiency in CAD tools (including experience with SolidWorks or similar CAD software; Inventor experience is relevant)
Knowledge of GD&T principles
Ability to interpret schematics
Understanding of system design methodologies
Knowledge of mechanical components, system integration, and manufacturing processes (highly desirable)
Ability to apply technical expertise in a dynamic environment
Strong communication skills when working with internal teams, suppliers and customers
Motivated, organised, and able to work to deadlines
