Overview

There are three positions based in Bridgend, Merthyr Tydfil or Rhondda Taff Ely. Travel to schools across regions is expected, with flexibility to cover other bases as necessary. There are two term-time positions and one full-year position (not term-time). All positions are part time (18.75 hours per week) across four days, e.g. 9:15am–2:30pm. This is a rewarding opportunity to contribute to the early identification of hearing difficulties in children, supporting their development and educational outcomes.

The successful candidate will work independently in school settings, performing hearing tests and liaising with health and education professionals. They will be responsible for arranging school visits and performing the administrative duties relevant to the role.


Responsibilities

* Work efficiently and confidently as an indirectly supervised practitioner guided by standard policies and procedures to screen and monitor children's hearing in schools
* Develop and maintain the knowledge and skills required to perform, record and report hearing tests safely and accurately
* Perform hearing screening tests and audiometry to ensure the child is managed appropriately
* Notify and prepare each school by phone prior to any visit
* Liaise with the school health team and school to ensure that each child has received relevant paperwork including consent for testing
* Communicate effectively with professional colleagues in Health and Education including head teachers, school staff, community paediatricians, GPs, school nurses/assistants, speech and language therapists and health visitors
* Communicate effectively with children considering their age, preferred language and developmental needs; provide reassurance to apprehensive children and use appropriate approaches for children with additional learning needs; involve school support staff as needed
* Gain cooperation and maintain a quiet and calm atmosphere during the test to ensure reliable and accurate results
* In instances of onward referral, contact parents by telephone to inform of results and discuss any relevant information, ensuring this is documented for sharing with audiology
* Report any complaints to the lead of paediatric audiology
* Use initiative when acting on information from children, young people, parents and carers; report safeguarding disclosures to the lead of paediatric community audiology
* Handle and store equipment and consumables within accepted and safe limits
* Complete daily calibration and hygiene checks on audiometer to ensure readiness prior to clinical use
* Identify equipment faults and report them accurately
* Assist in clinic-based audiology appointments as required
* Maintain own personal/professional development with mandatory training compliance
* Contribute to research, training and development programmes within Audiology by recording data and observations
* Maintain awareness of developments within Audiology to keep current competency
* Provide training as appropriate to trainees e.g. trainee audiologists or student nurses
* Provide own activity figures/statistical information to the clinical lead
* Participate in clinical audit and governance programmes within the Audiology Service and provide information as required
* Contribute to individual performance reviews
* Comply with departmental policies, procedures and guidelines and participate in changes to working practices
* Manage workload efficiently, following Directorate and Health Board policies and procedures
* Work on own initiative and as part of a team; work to tight deadlines and priorities
* Attend regular safeguarding training and understand responsibilities for reporting concerns in line with UHB policy and procedure
* Adhere to Health Board Lone Worker Policy and departmental procedures
* If in doubt about competence, speak with your manager promptly

Welsh language Desirable: This post is advertised as Welsh Desirable. The candidate does not need Welsh skills to apply, but proficiency at Speaking & Listening Level 3 (equivalent to CEFR B2) is an advantage during shortlisting.
