The purpose of the role is to help customers identify faults, deterioration, inefficiencies, safety concerns and potential failures before they result in breakdowns, downtime, energy waste or damage to plant and equipment.

The Employee must carry out all work professionally, safely and accurately, in accordance with Company procedures, customer site rules, RAMS, applicable standards and manufacturer guidance.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The Employee’s duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Carrying out thermographic surveys on electrical distribution equipment, control panels, switchgear, motors, mechanical equipment, process equipment and other customer assets.
  • Carrying out vibration analysis on motors, pumps, fans, bearings, gearboxes, conveyors and other rotating equipment.
  • Carrying out compressed air leak detection surveys using suitable ultrasonic or specialist detection equipment.
  • Where required by the Company and where the Employee is suitably trained, competent and authorised, the Employee may be required to carry out partial discharge testing and associated condition monitoring activities on electrical assets.
  • Attending customer sites throughout the UK to complete inspections, surveys, assessments and condition monitoring work.
  • Setting up, using and maintaining thermal imaging cameras, vibration analysis equipment, air leak detection equipment and any other specialist test equipment issued by the Company.
  • Identifying signs of overheating, loose connections, overloaded circuits, failing components, bearing defects, misalignment, imbalance, looseness, lubrication issues, mechanical wear, compressed air leaks and other abnormal conditions.
  • Recording survey findings clearly, accurately and consistently.
  • Taking clear photographs, thermal images, vibration readings, acoustic readings and supporting evidence as required.
  • Producing detailed and thorough reports based on survey findings.
  • Providing clear recommendations for remedial works, further investigation, maintenance action or monitoring requirements.
  • Grading or prioritising findings based on severity, risk, safety, reliability and potential impact on the customer’s operations.
  • Communicating findings professionally to customers, site contacts, managers and colleagues where required.
  • Ensuring reports are completed accurately and submitted within agreed timescales.
  • Working safely around live electrical equipment, moving machinery, production areas and industrial processes.
  • Complying with site induction requirements, permits to work, RAMS, method statements, safe systems of work and customer procedures.
  • Liaising with customer representatives to arrange access, confirm asset details and minimise disruption to site operations.
  • Keeping accurate records of work completed, assets surveyed, readings taken, defects identified and recommendations made.
  • Ensuring all Company equipment is kept clean, safe, calibrated where required and in good working order.
  • Reporting damaged, faulty, lost, stolen or out-of-calibration equipment immediately.
  • Maintaining confidentiality in relation to customer sites, processes, equipment, reports, findings, drawings and commercial information.
  • Representing the Company professionally at all times when dealing with customers, contractors, suppliers and members of the public.
  • Travelling to customer sites throughout the UK and staying away overnight where required.
  • Assisting with the development of report templates, inspection procedures and condition monitoring processes where required.
  • Supporting the wider Company with technical site inspections, maintenance support, electrical surveys and reliability-focused services where reasonably required.
  • Carrying out any other duties reasonably required by the Company.

Partial Discharge Testing

This may include, but is not limited to:

  • Partial discharge surveys on suitable electrical equipment, switchgear, cables, transformers, terminations, joints and other electrical assets.
  • Use of approved partial discharge testing equipment, sensors, probes, ultrasonic detection equipment, TEV equipment, UHF equipment or other specialist diagnostic equipment.
  • Carrying out non-intrusive inspections and testing where appropriate and where permitted by site rules, RAMS and equipment limitations.
  • Identifying possible signs of partial discharge activity, insulation deterioration, tracking, corona, surface discharge, internal discharge, contamination, moisture ingress, poor terminations, cable defects or other abnormal conditions.
  • Recording test results, readings, waveforms, screenshots, photographs, environmental conditions and supporting evidence.
  • Interpreting findings within the limits of the Employee’s competence, training and equipment capability.
  • Reporting suspected partial discharge activity clearly and accurately.
  • Recommending further investigation, monitoring, maintenance, isolation, specialist testing or remedial action where appropriate.
  • Producing detailed reports setting out the inspection scope, equipment tested, methods used, findings, limitations, risk level and recommended actions.
  • Liaising with customers, site representatives, engineers, manufacturers or specialist contractors where required.
  • Ensuring that all partial discharge testing is carried out in accordance with Company procedures, manufacturer instructions, site rules, RAMS, permits to work, applicable standards and safe systems of work.

The Employee must not carry out partial discharge testing, high‑voltage inspection work, intrusive testing or work near exposed live equipment unless they are suitably trained, competent, authorised and the work has been properly risk assessed and controlled.

The Employee must stop work immediately and report to the Company or the person in charge of the site if they believe the work cannot be carried out safely, if suitable access is not available, if equipment is unsuitable, if test conditions are unsafe, or if the task is outside their competence or authorisation.
