Speech and Language Therapy Assistant

Speech & Language Therapy Assistant Band 3
Hours: 30 hours per week
Base: Western Community Hospital, Southampton
In this post you will be joining a small, but supportive, reflective and dynamic team providing a service to out-patients and clients in their own home with a range of swallowing and communication disabilities. You will see stroke survivors and clients with Parkinson's disease and dementia.
You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a willingness to work as part of a range of services and a positive attitude to self-directed learning.
In addition, skills in information technology will be essential.
You should have had experience of working with vulnerable adults in a health, social care or a similar setting.
In addition to carrying out swallow and communication screens under the supervision of a qualified Speech and Language Therapist, your role will include providing programmes of care around swallowing and communication management.
There will also be administration duties involved within the post.

Main duties of the job
*To work with patients under the supervision and guidance of a qualified Speech and Language Therapist implementing programmes of care for individuals and groups with communication and swallowing difficulties, in a range of hospital and community settings.
*To provide administration and clerical support for SLTs working within the adult service.
*To create and develop therapy tools and resources as requested.
Our SLT service provides input to adult clients (aged 16+) with any form of acquired communication or swallowing disorder (excluding Adult Mental Health, voice disorders and dysfluency). The focus of clinical practice is within adult neurology, but clients with other acquired disorders are also seen. The SLT service works as part of the Home Enteral Nutrition team (HEN), Early Supported Discharge Teams (ESD), Snowdon Neurological Rehabilitation Unit (SNRU), Kite Unit (Neuropsychiatric Ward), Community Neurological Rehabilitation Team. There are close links with the Adult Community SLT service in Portsmouth and University Hospital Southampton.
Care, rehab and treatment provided by this service will enable optimum outcomes for clients to communicate, eat and drink as safely and/or as satisfactorily as possible with risks identified and minimised.
