Respiratory Consultant with Specialist Interest in Allergy

Applications are invited to apply for a Respiratory consultant with special interest in allergy (9.1 PA) within the department of Clinical Immunology and Allergy at Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH). The post is suitable for a candidate with a specialist interest in allergy and asthma. NUH provides a wide range of outpatient services for Respiratory and Allergy patients from within Nottinghamshire and the East Midlands region.

The appointee will join a team of 5 substantive consultants.


Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work with the Respiratory and Clinical Immunology and Allergy Consultant team to give professional direction and clinical leadership for specialist Allergy services with additional input into the care of patients with asthma. This will include supervision and management of patients with allergic conditions and asthma, contributing to achieving the standards required to maintain IQAS accreditation. The main part of the post will be supporting the allergy services including challenge day case. The role will include a weekly respiratory clinic with specific focus on asthma and ILO. In addition, they will contribute to teaching, clinical governance, and audit. You will be fully registered with the GMC.

NUH is committed to supporting and developing new consultants with directed training opportunities, a mentorship scheme and 2.0 SPAs in their first year (subject to review) to allow the pursuit of relevant new skills.

About us

We are looking for a colleague who is dynamic, flexible, and willing to join a team who deliver high clinical standards to both Respiratory and Allergy patients. There will be opportunities to get involved in service development as the department evolves its clinical work in a changing NHS environment. The successful applicant will therefore be expected to work collaboratively with our strong multi‑disciplinary team to actively drive further service development.

The appointee will be encouraged to support and develop established research and teaching links with Nottingham University. All our consultants are appointed as Clinical Teachers by Nottingham University.

The successful candidate will be on the Full and Specialist Register of the GMC or be eligible for registration within six months of interview. It is expected that the appointee will hold Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP).


Recruitment commitments

We wish to appoint an enthusiastic colleague who will be committed to driving service development. The Department will be flexible in supporting the development of sub‑specialty interests in Respiratory and/or Allergy. As part of their application process, we would encourage prospective candidates to discuss their personal interests with the Clinical Director for the Medicine care group (Dr Tasso Gazis), the Head of Service (Advanced Nurse Practitioner Kate Hopkinson) and with other departmental consultant colleagues, in both the respiratory and allergy services.

New consultants are actively supported at NUH with a mentoring programme in their early years as a consultant as well as an additional 0.5 PA in the first year to allow development of skills relevant to their new role.


Qualifications

* Full registration and a licence to practice with the GMC
* MRCP or equivalent
* Plan to apply for specialist registration after 6 months


Experience

* Experience in allergy including food and drug allergy, rhinitis and urticaria
* Able to communicate effectively with patients, carers and the wider MDT
* Experience of managing patients with general respiratory disease and asthma
* Specific training in patient safety and/or human factors/communication skills
* Experience of managing patients with Inducible Laryngeal Obstruction (ILO)
* Able to develop, present and operationalise ideas for service development/delivery
* Able to work as a team and delegate when appropriate
* Experience in change management


Personal skills/qualities

* Able to work flexibly in a changing health service
* Able to use NHS IT systems successfully


Teaching, audit and research

* Evidence of participation in clinical audit
* Able to teach and supervise junior /wider MDT effectively
* Original research publications


Practical requirements

* Ability to travel between the two trust main campuses (as needed)
