Role
We are looking for a strategic thinker who sees the bigger picture and is passionate about tackling crime in the waste sector. This Environment Agency priority attracts a great deal of attention and scrutiny from the government, media and waste industry. The team has a varied portfolio to secure sustainable funding, shape strategy to guide the organisation, provide support and expertise to embed strategy, develop metrics and use data-driven insights to assess waste crime and the effectiveness of interventions, advise and influence Defra to ensure effective powers and legislation to stop offending, provide leadership on strategic communications and external engagement to deter waste crime, and deliver accurate and accessible information to inform, engage, and foster understanding across diverse audiences.
In this role you will initially take a lead role in reviewing the Strategy to Reduce Offending in the Waste Sector, engage extensively with internal and external stakeholders (including Defra, industry and operational teams) to shape strategy, utilise data to ground the strategy in evidence, and develop control plans to translate strategy into meaningful action across the organisation.

We require a team player who is flexible and can address a range of work areas, priorities and challenges within the Waste Crime Team and the broader Waste and Resources Regulation department.
Team and context
You’ll join the Waste Crime team, a small but high-performing team in Waste and Resources Regulation, part of the EA’s Environment and Business Directorate. Our purpose is to provide strategic direction and shape our approach to reducing crime in the waste sector. We use evidence, expertise, and innovation to enhance and support delivery, influence policy and legislation, and secure resources.

* Previous experience in regulation and/or enforcement.
* Broad understanding of the waste industry.
* An awareness of the strategic landscape challenges in tackling crime in the waste sector.
