The Opportunity
As a senior member of the Engineering Design Management Team, you will lead multi‑discipline engineering resources to ensure the successful delivery of design work across complex and regulated projects. You will be accountable for maintaining design quality, ensuring compliance with applicable standards, and fostering a culture of safety and technical excellence.
Duties and Responsibilities
* Lead the development of robust and cost‑effective technical solutions.
* Reinforce and promote a strong safety culture within the engineering team.
* Oversee governance and assurance of design deliverables.
* Approve and check design outputs to ensure technical accuracy and compliance.
* Contribute to design and safety reviews at all project stages.
* Ensure design documentation is delivered to the required quality and timescales.
* Maintain compliance with safety legislation and statutory regulations.
* Manage engineering resources and contractors to meet project objectives.
* Support staff development and capability building across the team.
* Provide expert technical consultancy and guidance to project stakeholders.
* Define and allocate scope of design work, ensuring safety, quality, cost and schedule targets are achieved.
* Participate in recruitment and assessment of engineering personnel.
Qualifications & Experience
* Degree‑qualified in a relevant engineering discipline (or equivalent demonstrable experience).
* Chartered Engineer status (or working toward it) with a recognised engineering institution.
Preferred Qualifications
* Experience applying ISO 13849 standards.
* Technical background in cranes, hoists or mechanical handling systems.
* Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals within your discipline.
* Proven experience delivering engineering design in highly regulated industries (e.g. nuclear, defence, energy or similar).
* Demonstrated success leading the management and design delivery of complex engineering projects.
* Understanding of design requirements that support safety case development.
* Comprehensive knowledge of relevant safety legislation and statutory regulations.
* Strong organisational, leadership and interpersonal skills.
* High level of commercial and contractual awareness.
* Proven ability to manage multi‑discipline engineering teams and sub‑contractors.
* Experience developing technical input to support bids and tenders.
* Full membership of a relevant professional engineering body.
Setting for the Role
* Experience in nuclear or other safety‑critical industries.
* Full UK driving licence.
* Experience in preparing and contributing to bids and proposals.
