Managing Editor – 12 Month Maternity Contract
We are very excited to be partnering with a highly respected Membership organisation in the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. This organisation works to advance women’s health and wellbeing on a global level, and they are now seeking an experienced Managing Editor to cover a 12-month maternity fixed term contract. This role offers hybrid working, with 2 days in their London office and 3 days working from home.
The Managing Editor will report to the CEO and Board of Trustees and will work closely with the Editor-in-Chief and the Publisher, to shape and implement journal strategy, manage high-level projects, manage the journal department budget, and maintain the journal’s relevance in line with the organisation’s strategic plan. This position will also involve managing publishing tenders and negotiating publisher contracts. Therefore, we are looking for an experienced Managing Editor who can step in and move current and further projects forward over the next 12 months.
Key responsibilities will include:
Acting as an integral member of the senior management team, driving high-level strategic project delivery, such as publishing tenders, EIC recruitment and contract negotiation; departmental financial management and team leadership and development. Collaborating with stakeholders to identify and implement initiatives that enhance journal quality and impact. Editorial and Production oversight – ensuring timely publication with the highest standards, supporting the EIC managing appeals, research integrity and ethical issues. Developing effective peer review and editorial workflows and processes. Acting as a primary liaison with the journal oversight committee, managing the annual editorial budget and reviewing and adapting editorial workflows. Liaise with the organisation’s Publisher, and other external suppliers to implement advanced systems and processes that ensure high-quality and timely publication. The successful person will be educated to degree level or higher, in a life science subject (essential), with a minimum of 5 years proven experience in scientific publishing, ideally on a scientific, peer-reviewed journal, with at least 2/3 years in a Managing Editor role, or equivalent. Experience of leading a scientific society-owned journal is highly desirable, and experience with publishing tenders, including evaluation of bids and involvement in publisher contracts is essential for this role as this will be a major project going forward. You will possess strong leadership and team management skills, and significant experience of editing science-related material, with the ability to manage multiple and competing priorities.
This is a unique opportunity to take on substantial responsibility with a highly respected journal, and if you are ready to step into a leadership role and drive meaningful change we would love to hear from you.
This role carries a generous salary as well as excellent company benefits, and the aim is for the successful person to start by 1st April at the latest.
