Overview
Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust has opportunities for Maternity Support Workers to join our Multi-Professional Team at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, based on the Ante/postnatal ward. This 12-month secondment offers various hours. We are seeking applicants with experience as a Maternity Care Assistant or current Maternity Support Worker who can help deliver high-quality care to women/birthing people and their families. The role involves supporting women/birthing people and midwives and working within a Multi-Professional Team to provide care.
Applicants must have prior experience working within a Maternity Department and will be expected to work independently on tasks while remaining under the supervision of midwives. The role includes care and support for postnatal women/birthing people, their partners and babies, phlebotomy, breastfeeding support and advice, and maintenance of essential equipment.
The Trust provides extensive in-house training and support for ongoing professional development. Your development will be identified at your annual appraisal and supported by team leads and senior midwifery managers.
Responsibilities
* To maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene within all clinical areas (e.g., delivery rooms, theatre, equipment), make beds, and manage stock as required.
* To assist midwives in the care of women/birthing people antenatally, during labour, and postnatally to ensure planned programmes of care are provided.
* To participate in the provision of 24-hour cover for the unit, with flexibility to move within team areas as the service requires.
* To assist community-based midwives as directed by visiting women/birthing people in their homes during the postnatal period to provide care and support.
* To participate in maintaining general personal hygiene needs (e.g., toileting, bed bathing, oral hygiene) of women/birthing people where required.
* To assist in providing food and drink to women/birthing people.
* To be aware of the general condition and well-being of women/birthing people and babies by close observation and to report any deviation from the norm immediately to a qualified member of the multidisciplinary team.
Qualifications and Selection
* Experience of working within a Maternity Department is essential.
* Ability to work independently on defined tasks while under supervision of midwives.
* Evidence in the application of all essential criteria as described in the job and personal specifications.
* Training and professional development opportunities are provided; personal development is identified at annual appraisal and supported by team leads and senior midwifery managers.
* Shortlisted candidates may be invited to testing, with successful candidates invited to an interview on a separate date.
