Assistant Technical Officer Blood Transfusion
Applications are invited to join the team of Assistant Technical Officers (ATO) in the busy Blood Bank Department of Combined Labs at University Hospitals Plymouth. The post will be based in the Derriford hospital Blood Bank Department. ATO staff assist Biomedical Scientists in the examination of a wide range of clinical samples from patients, determining laboratory diagnosis and appropriate treatment. ATOs also carry out additional support duties essential for the smooth running of the department. The role is varied, interesting, and full training and supervision is provided.
Key Responsibilities
* Book in Group and Save Blood samples and other product requests.
* Operate analysers, centrifuges and other equipment to test samples according to standard national methods.
* Monitor refrigerator temperatures and ensure samples are stored properly.
* Use the on-site Blood Bank vehicle to drive to hospital establishments in Plymouth and possibly the rest of Devon and Cornwall.
* Maintain relationships with the Section Leader, Senior BMS, and supporting staff.
* Perform basic maintenance checks as directed and ensure senior staff are made aware when stock levels are low.
* Plan and prioritise own work under supervision, ensuring adherence to service requirements.
* Enter test results into the Pathology computer system for authorisation by BMSs.
* Prepare samples for analysis, including attaching bar-code labels, centrifugation, separation, and preparing aliquots.
* Verify that samples received match work lists, patient IDs are correct, and sufficient sample is available for the assay.
* Report rejected samples due to inadequate patient ID or incorrect sample type.
Qualifications and Requirements
* Full clean driving licence with at least 2 years of driving experience.
* Ability to work regular night shifts and weekends; enhanced pay rate applies.
* Attention to detail, strong communication skills, and ability to meet urgent deadlines.
* Past experience working in a laboratory or similar environment is desirable.
Working Conditions
The laboratory is a biological risk area requiring full health and safety training, PPE, and adherence to standard procedures. Safety training is provided on the job.
