An opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated, enthusiastic, and experienced nurse to join the Acute Oncology Service (AOS) at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospital NHS Trust (BHRUT). This is an exciting opportunity for a clinical nurse specialist (CNS) to be an integral part of the cancer and clinical support division. The post holder is expected to use independent judgment to assess, investigate, provisionally diagnose, implement, and evaluate the clinical care of oncology patients.
Following clinical review, the post holder will work with patients and treating medics to optimise symptom control and manage adverse effects from oncological treatments. Responsibilities include assessing patients via the emergency triage line, face-to-face in the acute oncology day unit beds, and through inpatient visits on wards and in the Emergency Department at both hospital sites.
As an Acute Oncology CNS, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality care to cancer patients in line with NICE guidance, working as a core member of the multidisciplinary team. The CNS in Acute Oncology provides expert care to patients presenting with acute complications of cancer or its treatment, requiring experience and knowledge in oncology to improve patient outcomes and reduce hospital admissions.
The post holder will be an integral member of the division, with clinical responsibilities and specialist knowledge to lead and coordinate the management of complications and oncological emergencies related to cancer and/or its treatment.
Within the AOS team, you will collaborate with colleagues in oncology and the wider MDT, providing specialist nursing care and expert clinical advice to patients with suspected or confirmed cancer presenting acutely unwell. This includes performing advanced assessments, history taking, physical examinations, and clinical decision-making to support timely diagnosis and intervention in line with NICE guidance for acute oncology.
Our organization is continuously improving, driven by a commitment to deliver high-quality care and patient satisfaction. We are no longer in special measures, have opened two new theatres at our Elective Surgical Hub in King George Hospital (KGH), and our CEO was named top CEO by the Health Service Journal in 2024.
We operate from two main sites: KGH in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford. Our emergency departments see over 330,000 visitors annually. We are campaigning to secure £35m to transform the A&E at Queen's and eliminate corridor care. Our patients benefit from services such as the Women's Health Hub in Ilford, an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch, and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and St George's Health and Wellbeing Hub in Hornchurch. These CDCs operate 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, providing an additional 94,000 scans annually.
Our diverse staff of over 8,000 people come from 146 different countries, many working flexibly. Over 400 staff members are enrolled in Ofsted-accredited apprenticeship programs. We are proud to be a London Living Wage employer and are planning to introduce an electronic patient record system to enhance staff efficiency and patient care.
