Our mission At Vertical Aerospace, we are pioneering the way for electric aviation. The VX4, our eVTOL (electric, vertical, take-off and landing), ‘zero emissions’ aircraft will set a new safety standard for how we will navigate the sky. We won’t realise our mission following the same legacy processes and traditions our predecessors followed, instead, we want to ‘redefine’ aerospace best practices. We are growing quickly from a prototype business to a scaling SME, and the next few years will be critical to our success and delivering on our ambitious goals of having the VX4 in service by 2030. What to Expect As an Advanced Battery Test Engineer, you’ll play a vital role in our Energy Storage team, leading the electrical and lifetime testing of high-voltage battery assemblies (>800 VDC). Your work will be central to VX4 certification, ensuring our batteries meet the highest standards of safety, performance, and reliability. You’ll combine hands-on testing of hazardous voltage systems with planning and reporting responsibilities, delivering results to traceable standards comparable with UKAS ISO17025. Working closely with senior colleagues, you’ll help define new test equipment and facility capabilities, develop robust methodologies, and mentor junior team members in safe HV practices. From supporting abuse, vibration, and environmental tests to contributing to external campaigns and facility development, this is a role for someone who enjoys both technical problem-solving and strategic planning — and who is motivated by tackling complex engineering challenges at the forefront of electric aviation. What You’ll Do Lead electrical and lifetime testing of high-voltage battery pack assemblies (>800 VDC). Plan, deliver, and report on electrical performance and ageing tests to support product development and certification. Develop test methodologies, procedures, risk assessments, and formal documentation to UKAS ISO17025-level standards. Support wider testing activities, including: Abuse testing (thermal runaway, crush, short circuit, mechanical shock) Vibration and structural testing Battery management system (BMS) testing Cooling system performance Environmental testing (humidity, dust, waterproofness) Certification testing in line with DO-160, DO-311A, and UN38.3. Design and deliver electrical systems and schematics for both HV and LV test networks. Carry out live high-voltage work at SAP (or equivalent) level, including inspections, instrumentation, and system analysis. Automate test execution and data analysis processes to improve efficiency, repeatability, and quality. Contribute to the design, development, and commissioning of new test equipment and facilities. Prepare RFQs and collaborate with external test providers; support offsite test operations, including travel and extended hours when required. Maintain accurate, traceable test records for certification authorities and internal stakeholders. Mentor junior engineers and technicians, building team capability in hazardous voltage and electrical lifetime testing What You’ll Bring 3 years’ experience in high-voltage systems testing, EV, or battery testing (Aerospace/Automotive). Background in battery test development at pack level. Experience of live HV work at Senior Authorised Person (SAP) or equivalent level. Hands-on expertise with battery cyclers, climatic chambers, cooling systems, and CAN-based tools (Dewesoft, Vector, PCAN, LabView). Proven track record in planning and delivering battery electrical tests. Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills Desirable Experience of operating, maintaining and calibrating laboratory equipment including battery cyclers, climatic chambers, cooling carts, etc. What can you expect from us?
